Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. But in the way a personal letter is often a little too personal for general consumption, so Patsy Matheson’s solo venture is perhaps a little too frank and unsubtle, a little too ‘heart laid bare’. A founding member of Waking the Witch, Matheson has departed from the sound and style of her former band. Her solo songs are straight-talking , ‘Addiction to You’ is a song of love gone wrong, and the theme continues throughout the album. And as simple and straightforward are the songs is the production: most is Matheson’s acoustic guitar and vocals, with occasional accompaniment by producer and multi-instrumentalist Sam Bartholemew. Best by far is ‘Ulverston Gypsy’ which steps away from the introspection of the rest of the album, and shows a spark which is wanting in some of the other tracks, though there’s something to be said for the lack of artifice that runs as strong as a theme throughout, and the lack of pretentiousness keeps you listening. A Little Piece of England is released on Witch Records Patsy Matheson will appear on 30 November at 8pm, at the Half Moon Putney, London. Links: |
