Paul Murphy - 'The Trip' / 'Withnail & I'

With impeccable timing, the best 12” of the year is being released very soon via Routine Records

Paul Murphy - Trip 12

A Japanese vinyl only 12” is the stuff of Paul Murphy’s own DJ heritage and it’s great to see he’s getting this type of respect as an artist.

‘The Trip’ is one hell of a title track and is, of course, on the best album of 2006. No surprise that it’s been singled out for a 12” release.

The Japanese Murphy fan club will be hoping this is the start of some more vinyl action like the brilliant remix of Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra’s ‘Skarada Dub’ by the Jazz Room team of Murphy and Marc Woolford (as featured on the This Is Afro Art compilation).

There’s always been a school of Afro Arthouse film club (remember ‘Seven Samurai’ and ‘Get Carter’?), so the there’s no surprise that ‘Withnail & I’ makes an appearance on the b-side. The film celebrates it’s 20th anniversary this year and remains the holly grail of student drinking games (Fly recommends that you always drink responsibly at all times).

Fans of the cinematic mix (such as Gilles Peterson) should also look out for the Jung Collective’s ‘The Wicker Man’ and responsible drinking jazz heads should be heading to see Murphy all over Europe (has he stopped gigging this year?) including another trip to Krakow and Shiftless Shuffle!

Hopefully, there’ll be a Murphy interview to celebrate the year of The Trip, so stay tuned for essential sustenance for the jazz room. Check out the links to Afro Art and myspace to be amazed.

Withnail & I: Details: 1986, UK, Drama/Cult, cert 15, 102 mins, Dir: Bruce Robinson
There is a drinking game associated with Withnail & I, which is popular amongst fans and students and frequently is the first experience some people have of the film. The game consists of keeping up, drink for drink, with each and every alcoholic substance consumed by Withnail over the course of the film. Most players may simply drink their beverage of choice regardless of what the characters consume, though this is viewed by the more “hardcore” Withnail & I fans as an “easy way out.” All told, Withnail is shown drinking roughly nine and a half glasses of red wine, half a pint of cider, one shot of lighter fluid (vinegar or overproof rum are common substitutes), two and a half shots of gin, six glasses of sherry, thirteen glasses of whisky and half a pint of ale. Since the whisky alone would be more than enough to necessitate a trip to hospital for most people, few, if any, keep pace for the entire film
