Peven Everett - Power Soul

You often hear the phrase, he/she loves the sound of their own voice. In Peven Everett’s case he’s not the only one.

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

If you think Xzbit likes the sound of “X to Z to the I-B-I-T”, fans of Gilles Peterson’s show will know that Peven loves to sing, “Peven Everrrrretttt” on the Worldwide radio jingle. His links with Peterson go back well before the ‘Gabrielle’ on BBC Sessions and Peterson’s INCredible compilation to a remix of Terry Callier’s ‘Love Theme From Spartacus’ on Peterson’s pre-Brownswood Recordings, Talkin’ Loud imprint.

Peverett is now on the Soul Heaven label and Power Soul is all about soul and funk heaven. ‘Stuck’ sets the pace on the funk side of things and has already turned up on a couple of Miami 2006 sampler compilations. Even if ‘Futuristic’ is on about video phones and the like, it’s got an eighties feel of soul with beautiful harmonies and it’s another one that falls in the new direction in soul and jazz. This is what the likes of Soft/Wave/Etc FM’s should be playing; and well, if they don’t, here’s a role for Fly FM.

But as good as this is, the man’s got his BAD side that’s anything but soft(FM). Just to keep up with the cross-genre-mash up Justin Timberlake’s hip hop-soul-dance with Prince metal guitar, ‘Bad Treatment’ is a rocker all right.

‘Surely Shorty’ is one of those uptempo bouncey ‘Gabreille’ soul-squiddy synth’n’ string tracks that gets you all on a dancefloor high of joyfulness. ‘Can’t Do Without’ and ‘Sexy Make Up’ are more on the jazzy Rhodes tip and are just excellent.

‘Wild & Thick One’ is soulfully broken with Peven doing some vocal gymnastics and all my life is half-way between ‘Can’t Do Without’ and ‘Wild & Thick One’ while ‘Just A Girl’ is the uptempo version.

And they just keep on coming. ‘Washing’ is no soap advert, more like sex on a passionate rope that gets us ready to chill out to the last track, ‘This Just In’ which is proper soul.

So there’s no duffers here and it’s a great album for home or club. And how many “Peven Everett” shouts? I counted 9 but I might have missed some; he’s a funky Peven Everett, one more time “Peven Everett”.

Hectic Mix nomination: Futuristic, Bad Treatment, Can’t Do Without, Just A Girl, Sexy Make Up, Washing [at least].
