Pop Levi - Never Never Love

‘Never Never Love’ sounds like good advice from former Super Numeri, Mr. Pop Levi but is his next single sound?

Well Pop Levi’s solo career has been on the borders of the next “musical maverick’ a la Patrick Wolf for some time. Ninja Tunes youngest sub-label Counter Records think they’ve cracked it this time as they sent him off to Hollywood to the former studio of Quincy Jones to record the new album and the title track, ‘Never Never Love’ is being released as the first single.

He’s not turned his back fully on his old Liverpudlian psych-rock roots of Super Numeri (that also included Karl Webb of Loka) or fully morphed into the next pedigree Marc Bolan/Prince cross, but the ‘Never Never Love’ is very ‘pop’. Post Beatles with a 80’s wedge haircut, it’s could be a big hit for the summer.

The one to watch out for though is LA’s Pink Enemy remix. I know nothing of Pink Enemy but the vocoder vocals and the cheek synth get a proper disco-pop tweaking as electro beats go part broken. “Love is all over me”, Pop sings. Even if Arthur Russell never got this commerical, he’d be proud to dance to this one; especially the outro.

Available in all formats next month and the original of the bonus track ‘Love You Straight’ is apparently very different to this ‘Astral Version’. Personally, I’d have prefered a more Super Numeri styled Astral version as this one is too John Lennon for me (noting Sean Lennon is one of their pals) but Levi has done that in the past and this does show off his range of talent.

The album Never Never Love is due out on 14th July so in the meantime, it’s worth checking out Counter Records other main groups, The Heavy and TheDeathSet. Both featured with Levi on You Don’t Know: Ninja Cuts recently and they should be looking to have their own compilation out soon like the older sibling, Big Dada.
