Lightning Head - N.P.G.

Lightning Head follows up his 7” with an even bigga 12” but it’s not all about size as this time it’s all about the Afrobeat

Lightning Head

Glyn “Bigga” Bush (aka Lightning Head) first single on Lionhead Recordings was the double A sided ‘Area Boy’/’Abyssinia Rising’ with a couple of bonus downloads tracks (‘Preguntas Por Que’ and ‘PPQ (Deeper Dub)’. The new release squeezes on four snazzy afro funkin’ tunes onto a massive 12”.

You might think that the current Lightning Head is straying away from the ‘Me And Me PrincessStudio Don into a more Yam Yam Eatdubafrobeat slash Equator Sound System groove. And you’d be right.

The long awaited album 13 Faces of Lightning Head has been on the cards since late 2004 and is finally due out in the summer. Featuring guest appearances from founder singer in The Slits, Ari Up, half of 2bo4 Earl Zinger (would that be 1bo4? See the review of Junkyard Gods) and New York rapper Candice Cannabis. Its timing couldn’t be better and while on the subject of all things Lighting Head/Bigga Bush, last month our man invited by All Time Top 100 to play, stangley enough, Glyn’s all-time top 100 ‘couldn’t-live-without’ tunes. An easy concept that gives a guests from a variety of musical backgrounds a Desert Island Discs opportunity for the 120GB pacemaker generation (not that he’s got a pacemaker yet).

Glyn joined the the ranks of the like of previous notables including Radio 1/Sunday Best/Bestival’s Rob Da Bank, Mixmaster Morris, Hexstatic, Tom Middleton, Ewan Pearson and A Man Called Adam, See below link to Glyn’s selection of funk, quirky late 60s mindbending prog, acid house, afrobeat original and reborn, eclectronica, psychedelia, dub, rocksteady, bluebeat, insane cover versions, exotica, big bands, boogaloo, rockers, bangers and classics. As ever, totally on form and always Bigga!

Lightning Head — Studio Don “The phrase ‘Lightning Head’ was something I read in an interview with Lee Perry and for me it captures the idea of being inspired — like not just a little light bulb appearing over your head but a whole bolt of lightning from the heavens, illuminating everything.”, Glyn “Bigga” Bush [2002]

“that’s the genuine running order and it was quite an experience. There were moments of extreme panic as I realised I’d played too many “accessible” tunes too early, leaving only the weird stuff for peaktime. Fortunately I had some of my other, more DJ friendly Top Tunes in my bag so took a detour into that area when I needed to” All Time Top Ten : Sunday 30 March from 6-Midnight The Big Chill Bar, Drays Walk, Brick Lane, London E1 6QL Tel: 0207 392 9180
