Pressure Drop - 'You're Mine' (Roots Edition)

The third in the Great Stuff Roots releases finds that they’ve dug out a track by much under-rated band, Pressure Drop

Pressure Drop -- 'You're Mine' ROOTS EDITION

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Back in the day, fans of Pressure Drop included Gilles Peterson, Ross Allen, Patrick Forge, Kevin Beadle, Bob Jones; you get the idea. It was a project of the Blood Brothers (Dave Henley and Justin Langlands) and ‘You’re Mine’ was an early effort that first appeared in 1992.

Great Stuff’s boss, Rainer Weichhold has sensibly included the original version on the 12” as it went on to be a hit with Kruder & Dorfmeister, Rainer Trüby, Jazzanova and Peterson. It’s an early 90s dance track set to a downtempo emotional orchestration that was in keeping with their trademark non-conventionalism. The soulful vocals by Joanna Law have a sexy come desperate psychopath message to them that makes the track hypnotic and timeless.

What’s even more hypnotic is the Tim Deluxe Dub version. Stripped back to the bare bones of a vocal, the pace picks up but he retains the trance like nature of the darkness within. Tim’s on a bit of a roll as he did a remix of GusGus’ single, ‘Moss’ that got big props including from Pete Tong, Friendly and Jim Rivers.

DJ Dirk Dreyer’s reputation on the remix front has been helped recently by the inclusion of his creations on the recent Miami WMC DJ promo CD. Based in Berlin, Dirk has been at One Louder since 1973 and is joined studio partner Pierre Deutschmann for a stunning house remix. Of the two vocal mixes, I just prefer the Deluxe one; apparently Tim has just been signed to Skint Records!

If this has prepared you for a bit of Pressure Drop archaeology, look out for their 1997 album, appropriately entitled Elusive. I’d definitely recommend picking that one up. Also, with their reggae-influenced hats on, they got involved with the Luv Lite Massive (aka Megablast), on a ragga/dancehall release (see interview HERE) and BiggaBush included one of his special remixes of one of their tracks on his Sound Senstation compilation.

So another corker from Great Stuff, and future ROOTS EDITIONS planned include another couple of mid-nineties hits, Nicolette (she of “No Government” on Gilles Peterson’s Talkin’ Loud label) and Marmion’s hit, ‘Schöneberg’.

I Need Record Labels In My Life (posted by Gilles Peterson) on www.brownswoodrecordigns.com
“So do you. That’s why I have re-emerged from the dark world of night clubs and subterranean radio studios to put my money where my mouth is once again! I started with Hardback back in the early eighties. This was with Andros Georgio and became a 3 part release enterprise backed by the one named Morgan Khan. He of Street Sounds for whom I’d released a series called Jazz Juice. If I remember correctly we put out a Duke Booty version of Broadway, Pressure Drop’s ‘Mellow Moods’ and a pretty crap attempt at ‘Champ’ by the Mohawks because we couldn’t licence the original! Anyway all 3 releases did ok, but when the crunch came to investing 10 grand in the next ‘George Michael’ produced release I bailed out — my first commercial mistake as it turned — the track went top 10 worldwide! it was a version of ‘Jive Talkin’ by the BeeGees and I went back to the pirates!”
