Red - Fingerprints...

Blown away by the Playsatan remix of ‘Seen’ which is to feature on the worldwide Sony PSP ads, can the genius of scratch move on up to an album release? Oh yeah, this guy has his finger on it

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Dealmaker Records will be releasing this at the beginning of next month with the original version of ‘Seen’ as a bonus track.

Red shows that his fingerprints are more than just one trick on the decks with these other 10 tracks. In fact, what’s most impressive about this collection is the amount of downtempo tunes his included. Similar in spirit to what Tal M. Klien has done on the other side of the pond on his Plastic Starfish album, these tracks (as the record label says), “explore moods and techniques seldom heard in the scratch world, and demonstrate Red’s pioneering spirit”.

You can’t have an album like this without a Blue Droppin’ Science Note tribute al a Gangstarr/A Tribe Called Quest and ‘Pictures On My Wall’, ‘Waddup World’ and ‘Ice Cold’ are they. Definitely on the jazzy tip, more of a lazy Sunday afternoon than club head nod. If you’ve ever wondered if you could do ambient scratchin’ (and then discarded that thought), Red has come back with a definitive “yes you can” answer. Particularly with the track ‘Snow’ (one for your leftfield Christmas mixtape) and ‘Clock Watching’.

Further out there are ‘Simmer’ and the closing track ‘E.T.’ that are a couple of delicate reflective loop grooves that reminds me a little of what Ammoncontact/Hu Vibrational have done in the past.

‘Samba Scratch’ mixes things up with soulful diva and a samba rhythm and I like the start to ‘All’s Fair’ with a skit on “What is your instrument”. In Red’s case it turntables and mixer. So, even more impressive to note that’s all he’s used on every track on the album; it all comes from him and his finger manipulations.

I said on my review of ‘Seen’ that these boys from Nottingham are taking it to the next level, but I never thought Fingerprints would be it, but it is.
