Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. It certainly was, so you ask yourself, what has Headman (aka Manhead and Robi Insinna) been up to since then? Apparently he’s been working non-stop as the head of Relish Records with five years of back catalogue, so it’s an opportune time to release their first compilation CD. However, this two CD set is no self-congratulatory slap on the back as it concentrates of the stars of tomorrow rather than past glories. CD1 is Headman’s mix party tape that kicks off with David Gilmour Girls’ ‘Crack House Warming Party’ (as featured on Compilation EP that isn’t as drug crazed as the title suggests as Girls (who happen to be two Dutchmen) tip their hats at the crazy diamonds on stage. Currently touring with post-indie disco kids from NYC, The Rapture, the Rug’n’Tug remix is a great way to start a party. The Franz & Shape vs. N.O.I.A ‘The Man Who Paid Before’ keeps up the pace and then there are a couple of tracks by Yuksek (who did a remix of ‘Maximum Joy’). Yuksek has found some new wave electro pop that could take on the Hot Chips this time next year and, of course, Riot In Belgium (two blokes from Oz) have a head start on the nu-rave scene with ‘The Acid Never Lies’. It goes without saying, it’s expertly mixed by Headman but that’s not everyone’s cup of tea so there’s also an eleven track unmixed CD included. While The Rapture and Franz Ferdinand have made their names in the charts, it’s no surprise that A Certain Ratio thought it was a good idea to reform. ‘Way To Escape’ that was on the Compilation EP is the first track but we’re treated to a whole host of disco punk funk. You can’t have been near a dancefloor or record shop in the last few years without coming across Lindstrom and Prins Thomas and they don’t miss out on this one as they push Italy’s Nemesi track ‘Cosmica’ further out into disco space heaven. And talking of disco space heaven, Don Cash’s ‘Baby’s Rad’ is like a re-work of the late great Edwin Starr’s ‘Eye Contact’ (and it must be noted he was equally great on the Northern Soul scene). And while on underground dance culture, we get to hear Dennis Young’s next 12”, ‘Switch It’. Formerly the percussionist in Liquid Liquid (who were signed to 99 Records with ESG) this is the disco end of the no-wave movement (as opposed to the jazz-punk end of the still active Lydia Lunch or James Chance) have attracted Hot Chip for the remix. Headman/Manhead is also a musician and clearly a huge fan of the 90’s New York scene as ‘On & On’ is very much a tribute to the Scroggins sisters and Paradise Garage. It’s one of the stand-out tracks on this album of goodness along with the bonus track, the massive Headman’s remix of Dennis Young’s ‘Dervish Delight’ (acoustic percussion meets Blue Monday’). So whether it’s Zurich, Berlin, New York, Torino, Sydney, Milan, Paris, Amsterdam or anywhere else for that matter, Relish Recordings have a beat for your boogie-on down.
