Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Mr Manuva returns with one of the standout tunes from last year’s superb Slime & Reason‘Do Nah Bodda Mi’ that found its way onto the Alexander Nut compilation Rinse:08 along with some young upstarts. Talking of which, ‘Do Nah Bodda Mi’ was one of the bass filled track produced Toddla T (he of Sanky Sanky and it’s in true Rootical style on the bouncy electro-dancehall tip as Mr. Smith tell folks to leave him alone! On the remix, Wrong Tom takes the original and turns it into classic eighties digi-dub, the spirit on “Sleng Teng” and it serves an appiitser to the bonus CD of Wrong Tom’s reggae versions and dubs for Slime & Version. Roots Manuva himself is taking time out next Saturday from working on material for his new album to attend the face-painting and tombolas of the Alma Road Street Party (see links below) so this will be the last single from Slime & Reason. Have Bid Dada saved the best until last? Arguable as I’d say ‘Let The Spirit’ is better but as ever with Mr. Rodney Smith, it’s all good, essential and a bit bananas! Reviewed: Roots Manuva - Do Nah Bodda Mi (Big Dada Recordings) Cat. No: BDCDS145 Release date: 29th June 2009 Reviewed: Press Quotes for “Slime and Reason” “The finest rapper we have…Slime and Reason is easily his best and most accessible album.’ Observer “A work of genius.” Observer Music Monthly “It’s three years since Roots Manuva’s last record, Instantly relevant again.” Big Issue “Smith sounds urgent and fresh and revitalised.” Uncut “Smith never shouts yet he exudes presence…He turns the self-aggrandising clichés of rap on their head, describing a world where inadequacies merit as much attention as triumphs. All this plus silly jokes and beats you can bounce to.”’ The Daily Telegraph “One of the most powerful sounds around.’ Daily Record “A classier affair than any trans-Atlantic counterpart, Londoner Roots talks ‘street’ without being patronising, parties without being clichéd and is funny without being crude.” FHM “Roots Manuva’s body of work is fast-becoming one of the best discographles in homegrown hip-hop.’ The Voice “Our finest UK hip hop star…a bracingly modern record that throbs with enthusiasm.” Time Out “The beats and lyrics are infectious and irresistible, soon enough leaving you reaching for the play again button…Rodney Smith still knows how to do hip hop like no one else can.’” ATM “A brilliant collection of songs…easy-going entertainment, shooting off in an army of moods and directions…Rodney Smith still carries the swing. And he’s carrying it easy.” Hip-Hop Connection “This could be his finest album yet.” Knowledge “Sounds like a fruit machine you’ve just won a million pounds on.” Maxim “One of the UK’s most consistent and engaging acts - whatever the genre.” Music Week “The true sound of urban Britain.’ Mixmag “Roots Manuva has been ploughing his own wonky furrow through the borderlands where hip hop rubs up against reggae for some time and this whole album demonstrates that all that dedication was worthwhile.” Word |
