Roots Manuva meets Wrongtom - Jah Warriors feat. Ricky Ranking

Roots Manuva is back! Not only is he live at Big Chill on Saturday, there’s a single out at the end of the month and a (sort of) new album, a brand new album next year plus a special on Gilles Peterson’s show - what more do you want?

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

As Roots Manuva returns to do a “Back-2-Back” on Gilles Peterson’s Radio 1 show today [see links below for Listen Again for 7 days], following in the steps of Thom Yorke and Erika Badu no less, apart from the pair of them looking forward to the Big Chill Festival this weekend (Roots with full live band on Saturday, Peterson on decks Sunday)

You may recall that after Roots’ Slime & Reason came out a couple of years ago, there was a Wrongtom bonus disc Slime & Version (with the pink cover). With Roots’ seal of approval, he explains that the new album, “”It’s a bit of a funny thing as it’s like a bit of a re-working of a whole bunch of accapellas from across all my albums over the years… and it’s all been put together by DJ/Producer Wrongtom and he’s taken a distinctly dub and 80s dancehall tilt on things, it’s nice”

At the end of the show, there’s a nine track mini mix and Wrongtom certainly has got it spot on (especially ‘Buff Nuff’, ‘Proper Tings Juggled’ and ‘Son of Bodda’). The Roots Manuva meets Wrongtom album Duppy Writer comes out in September but ‘Jah Warriors’ is the only ‘new’ track that’s a low-down Calypso-dancehall-hip hop jam that sees Roots as hard as ever plus Ricky Ranking joins in on the ‘Jah Warrior’ chorus.

I’ll be interesting to hear Roots’ original version of this one (most unusual to have the re-work version before the original) but expect to hear “Jah Warriors” all over the Eastnor Castle Deer Park.

Backed up with some more steel pan beats on the stepper ‘Bashment Bogle (exclusive to the single) - simmer down - and a finally the classic ‘Buff Nuff’ re-tuned into ‘Rebuff’.

If you’ve not heard the Roots show with GP, thoroughly recommend it as he’s as “warm, funny, infectiously danceable” as he was on his monster ‘Witness (1 Hope’); well, well, well…, we all love Roots!

And a great retro cover and whilst on the subject, don’t be put off by the cover of Jammer’s album Jahmanji (also on Big Dada), you know what they say.
