Rory More - 'The Carmine Sands' EP

This is music from London, E2, but not UK garage, grime or dubstep — this is organ-led jazz funk with a delightful retro feel.

‘You Do Something’ has a whole side of the record to itself and as it spins it brings to mind pretty girls with beehive hairdos and miniskirts. Rory More plays Hammond organ and Tamara Schlesinger’s cheery vocal add to the vintage sound, which encompasses enough 60s bubblegum pop to please more than just jazz aficionados. Chirpy and upbeat it should prove popular as home listening or out on the dancefloor.

Flipping the EP over, Rory More switches from Hammond onto a Lowrey organ. The tempo calms, moving into atmospheric vibes such as those of the Karminsky Experiment, a group with whom Rory also plays organ. Less dancefloor, more bar or lounge orientated, the B-side begins with ‘The Curl’ and also contains the EP’s title track.

‘The Curl’ rolls into action with excellent drums, followed by appealing stabs from the Lowrey before the bassline takes control. Tarek Abou-Chanab’s bongos and percussion help drive the song along. The mood mellows further as the EP comes to a close and ‘Carmine Sands’ has a Balearic, post-club feel with Louise Ness whispering over a blissful ambient soundscape.

The Carmine Sands EP is a quality independent release on Joyntsounds. No CDs or downloads here, the EP is available in limited numbers on 12” vinyl (500 copies only). Rory More is a regular guest at the highly talked about Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club so look out for live shows. His music, along with similar exquisite sounds, features at club nights hosted by the EP’s co-producer, Gian ‘Weegee’ Amat, including the magnificent Fickle Formula evenings held monthly at 3 Blind Mice in Shoreditch, East London and his occasional Saturday sessions at the ever popular Tiki bar, South London Pacific.
