Sabrina Malheiros - New Morning : Deluxe Edition |

|
This is the version to get as not only has it been re-mastered, it’s been re-packaged (far better cover than the original) and has the added bonus of previously unreleased tracks with remixes and total re-works. Pride of place should go to Nicola Conte who picked the title track to totally re-work (a track I wasn’t that keen on from the original release, see review HERE) and the opener ‘Brisa Mar’. We’ve not heard or seen much of Mr. Conte apart from the Viagram series so it’s great to have him back on such fine form. ‘Nova Estação’ and ‘Além Do Sol’ sounds as good as ever and you’ll recall that most of the tracks are written Sabrina in collaboration with Alex Malheiros and producer Daniel Maunick (aka DJ Venom and son of UK Jazz-Soul-funk legends Incognito, Bluey). You can really hear the heritage in the previously unreleased ‘Ginga De Amor’ but why the fade out? On last week’s Gilles Peterson show, he was talking to Quantic about Arthur Verocai who helped him out on arrangements on his Tradition In Transition but Sabrina got in before him as he did some beautifully soaring strings on the original album, like the “stunning” ‘Connexão’ and no slight to Sabrina, ‘Sintonia’ and ‘Brisa Mar’ are now expose the strings as instrumentals and are even more magnificent on this new CD. I predicted ‘Connexão’ would be a sort after remix and I hope Paradiso would do it justice and I think it’s fair to say, if you want some uptempo house-cancao this is the version you’ll be after (another sharp fade though) but someone else that we’ve not heard from for a while is IG Culture who puts in a fantastic house vs. broken psychedelic jazz dub; and watch out for the ‘hidden’ bonus instrumental track. What with Brazil hosting the next World Cup and the Olympics, there’s lots to celebrate and this album will get you up for it. And don’t forget, Mr. Peterson (who celebrated Far Out’s 15th birthday with the the Brazilika compilation earlier this year) is out this Friday at Guarnabara for their 5th Birthday along with London School Of Samba (hey, why not the Magic Drum Orchestra?), DJ Limao and DJ Dan Seixas (and Gilles is in München on Saturday for 15 Years Of Compost!) Usually wording on CDs like “Deluxe Edition” usually means rip-off when it’s a major label. This is not the case here, more like an artists quest for perfection and it come pretty damn close to it! Sabrina Malheiros - The New Morning (deluxe edition) just oozes class and sophistication. Some top drawer remix action included and of course it’s from Far Out Recordings. Nuff said.
