Seeed - Next!

After the success of ‘Slowlife’, assisted by MTV’s unfathomable restriction on playing the video, we’ve been looking forward to the release of this album with the help of a few big name friends

Seeed - Next!

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

The group, whose main members are half African, half German, were joined by Kano, a forerunner of the UK Grime scene, on ‘Slowlife’ and French hip hop collective Saïan Supa Crew on ‘Thing’.

Hip-hop dancehall rhythms are to the fore on ‘Good To Know’ but these guys (well, there are 11 of them) like to mix it up and they’ve got a very commercially tuned ear, as they display on the title track. They already have three gold albums to their name and this one is destined to follow that success.

‘Rise & Shine’ featuring Cee-Lo Green is a likely single as it’s got that Fat Freddy Drop soul-big horn bounce to it. ‘Waterpumpee’ and ‘She Got Me Twisted’ are similar in feel while ‘Stand Up’ is full of energy. ‘Pressure’ and ‘Music Monks’ get all kasbah dancehall but it’s ‘Thing’ that stands out with Kano who makes ‘Slowlife’ (the version without him sounds quite odd).

JA’s Lady Saw turns up on ‘Please, Please’ and Tanya Stephens on ‘Double Soul’ but they’re not the strongest tracks here. Talking of which, ‘Goosebumps’ is for lingering fans of Buster Bloodvessel but there’s definitely more good than bad including a selection of bonus tracks including their big hit, ‘Dickes B’.

It’s hard for a predominantly live act to make an impression on CD (also see Medeski, Martin & Wood) but for Germany’s finest, this is as close as they could possibly get and you wonder what’s Next!?

Hectic Mix nominations: ‘Thing’ (French Version), ‘Slowlife’ with Kano, ‘Pressure’, ‘Rise & Shine’, ‘Waterpumpee’ and ‘She Got Me Twisted’
