Sibot & Spoek Are Playdoe - Afrobotic

Taking that electro, hip-hop B-more thing a stage further, welcome to the Afrobotic.

WORK013.jpg

Sibot (aka Simon Ringrose) was South Africa’s 2002 “Battle of the DJs” scratch champion and has a long history of producer collaborations. As a known “dance floor terrorist” based in Cape Town it seemed only a matter of time before he’d team up with South African rapper Nthato Mokgata and Playdoe is the result.

These guys are using the innovative work of the likes of the Arabian Prince (see Life: The Anthology, 1984-1989, out now on Stones Throw Records), mixing it up with some modern day Spack Rock and a bit of UK grime at the same time.

‘It’s A Beat’ via Simian Mobile Disco gets reworked as an original, a chemical Toxic Avenger remix and a lenghty Dan Le Sac version; watch out for some gutter B-more lyrics; big dance floor material. I’d like to have Crookers working it out and that’d probably be the ideal set.

The other tracks are more impressive if you ask me like ‘Pop Like This’, ‘Metro Waste Line’, (with more potty mouth) ‘Fish Gut’ and their ‘anthem’, ‘Neoelectro Afrobotic’.

Playdoe’s Spoek has said, “I just enjoy experimenting and expressing my little thoughts. The idea of an authentic Africa is somewhat archaic, and my trying to express that ‘authentic’ African sense or flavour (by bullshit foreign standards) would be a farce, so I just do me…. and have fun.”

Not the sort of thing you’d think would be at the home of Adam Gnade & Youthmovies’ Honey Slides, Jonquil or Blankit, so more power to them. You’ll note some of their dates below are a couple of day before Mr. Pants hits town (see HERE) so where applies, I think you need to see both.

Forthcoming Live Dates:
25 Sep 2008 Playdoe (Puregroove Show) The Macbeth, London
26 Sep 2008 Playdoe Barhouse, Chelmsford
27 Sep 2008 Playdoe Adventures Close To Home, Aberdeen
2 Oct 2008 Dirty Boots at Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes, London
3 Oct 2008 Cardiff Buffalo Bar, Cardiff
8 Oct 2008 Proud Galleries, Camden, London www.atproud.net
