Skrein - The Beat Up

If you loved DJ Nonames’ Beggars Brew, this is another top hip hop mixtape that’s got the best of British and a few underground US tracks aiming to beat you up

Skrein

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

The cover artwork is dark tribal graf that looks like a load of characters spewing out of a washing machine. It doesn’t really represent Skrein’s clown prince of hip hop image or that of his mates who appear on this CD.

Starting with a homage to all 14 year olds that listen to Westwood (not Pimp My Ride UK), Foreign Beggars take it to the dark side of ‘Reign In Blood’ and staying there, Kelakovski’s beats are really underground, like ‘Mother Earth’. Rather pointless phone obsession of ‘Skrizzle’ takes Dubbledge to MF Doom reminding us of Fist Of Jah.

Crazy Tone The Crackhead gets a load of aggression out of his system on ‘Crazy Tone’ totally oblivious to the AWB jazz-funk going on behind; head to head England vs. Scotland with ‘Ard Bastard.

‘The Werry Traveller’ with Graziella adding the soul vocals ain’t any preparation for the scary mind mess of ‘How’s It Feel’ duelling with Plan B. Hold on, this is supposed to be Skrein aka The Dingerlady P.I.M.P aka ‘hip hop’s Keith Chegwin’. Any happier with alcohol? Yeah, getting merry ‘round the Joanna, ‘Raise Ya Glasses’ ‘till ya drop, cheers. And when the crawl gets to the piano bar, there’s ‘Pineapples and Pistachios’ for nibbles.

Shamless proclaims his non-supportive hunger, “TG Tips style, tea bags suck on that.” The bloke’s a star and then Doc Brown turns up on Part II.

Crazy Tone comes back for sober Rowley Birkin QC meets Sir Henry At Rawlinsons End, time to skip to ‘Mine For The Taking’ with favourites, Dr Syntax and Verb T.

‘Ghost Town’ gets a sortin’ by Dubbledge that Terry and the Dub Pistols wouldn’t believe
and the CD ends with a hidden R&B track with some incredible lines; at last he’s having a laugh.

Hectic Mix nominations: ‘The Werry Traveller’ (single download from June 4th), ‘How’s It Feel’, ‘Mother Earth’, ‘Raise Ya Glasses’, ‘The Eat Up’, ‘Mine For The Taking’, ‘Ghost Town’

www.step-on.co.uk Skrein Interview, December 2006 “Who do you most admire in the UK scene at the moment?
Simple. KELAKOVSKI. I hear you saying “who?” But watch, he’s the dogs bollocks and he’s gonna be recognised soon. He is a producer from Birmingham who got in contact with me on myspace. As soon as I heard the beats, I was like rare, this guy’s special, you know?
