Slovo - Todo Cambia

Dave Randall, the guitarist from Faithless, created a project called Slovo that produced the highly acclaimed debut album Nommo but this follow-up is even better

Any album that starts with a rap that references Titantic, Sound Of Music and Shawshank Redemption points at a cinematic journey and Todo Cambia is definitely that.

A mixed of folktronica, trip hop, rap, poetry and politics with MC Bobby Whiskers and some big name contributions from, be prepared to be impressed, “Booker Prize”® winner turned political activist Arundhati Roy, Boikutt of Palestinian hip hop crew Ramallah Underground, Bolivian activist Oscar Olivera, the President of Venezuela Hugo Chavez and US prison activist George Jackson.

For all the politics, it’s the simple love song of ‘The One’ (sung by Randall) that’s rightly been earmarked as the first single. Together with ‘Being You’ (sung by Rhianna Kenny) that could be another single, these are the stand out tracks.

That said, it’s more of a concept to listen to as a whole but even Billy Bragg hasn’t made a thought provoking track about nationalism that you can dance to like ‘Flags’.

Not so keen on the trippy d’n’b flavour of ‘Spun Out’, the rather obvious theme of ‘Magazine Men’ (but the synth sounds good) and ‘Many People’ is a bit too Faithless?

No idea what Chavez/Olivera talks about on the title track but it’s very effective. It’s a shame it’s not longer while, readings by George Jackson from his prison letters, ‘Soledad Brother’ added to Bobby Whiskers rap finds the Slovo group at their most emotive; think Coldcut at their downtempo best.

‘On The Bus’ is a gentle finish and while this album never really gets into any sort of top gear, it’s hot in other ways. Check the website for free mp3 downloads to get an idea for yourself.

Hectic Mix nomination: ‘The One’, ‘Flags’, ‘Todo Cambia’, ‘Soledad Brother’, ‘On The Bus’
