Solar Apple Quarktette - Soho By Night

The new single released is out on 9th April 2009 and finds the Solar Apple Quarktette more further out than usual with an Australian female in Soho after dark!

SAQ’s Australian friend is Jenni Lush who is the one providing the dreamy vocals as she “reflects on lost love in blue tones while trying to dodge the creatures of the London night…”. Yes, well whilst there are a rich variety of creatures in the Soho area during the day and night, this track has moved away from the SAQ (aka Richard ‘Hear Me Now’ E and Mr Christy) classic sound of ‘Berwick Street’ off The London EP of 2003; the one with the Paul Murphy remix .

‘Soho By Night’ is a seamless mix of broken jazzy house with deep baseline that’s indeal transition (in DJ speak) to deep house, dubstep, chill-out or something else; “something ain’t right” but that’s how we like it - SAQ have done it again! Not only that but there’s the instrumental version where the Rhodes and Hammond B3 come into their own; not Graham Bond, but this is serious London music. ‘Do You Love Me Too’ for 2009 and lovin’ those West Coast harmonies and indo-jazz touches.

Long-time fan of Further Out Recordings, Simone “Jazz It Up!!!” Vimercati has been playing the label’s other major artist this week, Annabel(lee). ‘Perception’ is, once again, atmospheric jazz at its best. I understand the label is getting a little bit of indirect Government support at the moment in these difficult times worth keeping up to date with their activities in all the usual places.

For more on the SAQ, see the very long awaiting debut album review HERE and it’s appropriate that we get new SAQ tracks this week as yesterday, Market Place celebrated it’s 7th Birthday. Fans of Radio Saturn turned up in the basement to raise a glass to that much missed monthly gig that Richard, Simon S (of Futuristica Music) and countless guests made such an important part of the London scene.

And on the subject of much missed, SAQ were lucky enough to get Ian Carr to play on the track ‘Kali Yuga’ and Richard was instrumental in organising the Nucleus gig at Cargo so it is with great sadness to read of Ian’s recent passing but with great joy that we still have his great music to listen to; RIP.
