After releasing Bustin’ Out (New Wave To New Beat: The Post Punk Era 1979-1981) and X-Ray Spex - Live @ The Roundhouse, London 2008, Year Zero have dug even deeper to dust off Sound Iration In Dub that was originally released in 1989.

This was the birth of ‘UK Steppers’ as Nick ‘Manasseh’ Raphael and Steve ‘Scruff’ Guilder’ produced their first album release on the WAU / Mr. Modo Records label (a label set up by Killing Joke’s Youth and The Orb’s Alex Paterson). Typical of its day, the original release was a mere 8 titles that are reproduced here for the first time on CD. With the benefit of hindsight, it’s really is a tribute to the old garde of JA dub as this is the bass heavy spiritual sounds (particularly the master of melodica dub, Augustus Pablo) that got lost in digital dancehall age of the past 20 years.

In fact, you could even say that West London DJ, producer, radio presenter Nick Manasseh foresaw this digital invasion as he spent most of the 80s re-inventing 70’s roots dub as he worked on the album and the Manasseh Sound System (launched at the Notting Hill Carnival in 1985). Linking up with Femi of Talkin’ Loud’s Young Disciples and (now) Notting Hill legend Norman Jay, the crew covered all the bases and were the people to follow at the warehouse parties.

This re-issue comes with a whole bonus CD of 14 previously unreleased tracks. It’s on this CD that you can hear how far ahead of their time they really were (in what’s now a world/retro sense) and what they kept for the dub plates for the Manasseh Sound System.

There’s comprehensive sleeve notes by Kris Needs with all the history but we know that he’s still hangin’ out will (now) Norman Jay MBE (at SunSplash Antalya 2010 - 23rd to 30th May 2010) and is still big on the seen with remixes for Soothsayers and the like. You might get the idea that all the kids want to do this days is turn into dubstep producers but here’s a lesson in the old ways; so light up your chalice of choice, turn the bass up to 11 and be transported to a different world - C. T. U. F. B. indeed.
