After the debut single ‘Searching’, Speech Debelle and her band The Therapists are back and this isn’t the type of thing (perhaps) that you think comes from Big Dada; well compared to thier other new signings Thunderheist, Two Fingers and XRABIT + DMG$ anyway.

If Roots Manuva was a teenage girl with an attitude you’ll be somewhere close; perhaps a female alternative to Riz MC. What is common with all three of them is an honesty and a need to say something, a message, a story.

The track ‘Searching’ was complimented by the gentle guitar chill with rap beats (a bit of a find in more ways than one) and so impressive for a debut single. Speech is already in making waves on Radio 1 (Huw Stephens), Radio 4’s ‘Loose Ends’ (don’t forget The Long Lost will be on that show on 21st March) and Resonance FM and the new single will find her unlocking even more doors. I love the line, “I don’t really care what you say, you can keep talking ‘til your blue in the tooth” (especially after me dongle ain’t connecting to Bluetooth speaker today).

This is very promising and she’s got gigs coming up at Cargo, the Roundhouse and starts with supporting The Long Lost at Barden’s Boudoir (19th March) which should be fantastic. Speech is the rap and understand is the key.
