Spengler - 'Beautiful' |

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Having had ‘Good Things’ featured on the Tru Thoughts compilation Shapes 07:01, Spengler’s delightful sounds have already reached a fair few people’s ears. Their new release on their own label, Bermuda Triangle takes the music even further with two marvelous soul tracks plus a dancefloor friendly remix by Surra. Neil Pollock has constructed ‘Beautiful’ excellently with energising handclaps and the mesmeric flugelhorn from Mark Armstrong particularly impressing me. Laid out over a thumping kick drum, each layer is timed and placed terrifically. Turning the record over ‘Justify’ has a brilliant beat, as infectious as David Price’s vocal is catchy, indeed I have found myself singing his lyrics over and over whilst pottering about the house. This is luscious soul music suitable for any bar or bedroom. Even more depth and quality is added in ‘Justify’ through the delicious sounding and cleverly arranged horns. In the remix of ‘Beautiful’, Surra slices up the vocal inventively staying true to the original while surrounding Huw Price’s singing with excellent drums. Definitely music to make people dance and put a smile on their faces. A talented producer as well as remixer, Surra’s Hype Up EP on Amalgama displays the dexterity of his music making. To hear such sounds loud it is well worth checking the Fresh Rotations nights happening regular in Cardiff, these sessions have also hosted Somatik, another Welshman who in turn was the engineer for the Spengler single. Having bubbled within the broken beat-cum-twisted funk scene for a while, assisting the likes of Marc Mac and Talvin Singh, it is great to see Somatik’s awesome Indian infused drum and bass tracks ‘Zor’ and ‘Yad’ getting a digital release (check link below to hear that heaviness). With plenty of DJ and radio support from key figures such as Michael Rütten, Patrick Forge, Dom Servini and Simon Harrison at Basic Soul, Spengler’s broad appeal continues to grow and long may it do so.
