Stereo MC's - Sun / Tomorrow Never Knows

If you’ve recently seen the Glastonbury film with a clip of the Stereo MC’s banging out ‘Connected’ and wondered, “What ever happened to them?” well now you know.

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

They’ve continued to tour and are back releasing singles this week. Albeit, you’ll only be able to find the downloadable variety at the moment but ‘Sun’ came out in time for the Guildfest gig and its timing couldn’t have been better (weather-wise at least). The 12” is coming out at the end of the month and it has some good remixes on it.

The original version of ‘Sun’ is typically funky Stereo MC’s and an obvious favourite for their live sets as they continue to tour Europe throughout the summer. Rob B and Cath Coffey do their rap vs. soulful diva duet that has been mixed by Fatboy Slim’s engineer (Simon Thornton) in big drums, indie guitar and soulful Hammond mode.

The Mutiny Mix is much more dance floor tuned emphasising Ms. Coffrey’s vocals with big strings and apparently a regular feature of Rob B DJ sets (next one 9 September at Flex Club, Vienna).

The interesting ones for me are the Deep South Remix and Dub versions that include little bits of disco car wash, hip-hop and rave.

It’s rounded off with a version of the Beatles’ ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ that they did to commemorate th 25th anniversary of John Lennon’s death on Radio 2. I’m no great fan of the fab four, but similar to other cover versions of late like, ‘Don’t Stop The Music’ and ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’, you can see why this got a great response from the listeners. Again, I’d prefer a dub version but it’s a big bangin’ track all the same.
