Julia Biel on Buzzin’ Fly Records! Julia Biel as in Soothsayers, as in London Jazz Festival, as in BBC Radio Jazz Awards nominations, as in Lautrec, as Not Alone (Ed. you get the idea and there’s an interview HERE). Not only that Biel has already featured on Watt’s own ‘Guinea Pig’ and Unity’s ‘I Love You’ and following on from the jazz meets house tip of the classic Hell & Christian Prommer’s ‘Freak It’ on the label, this collaboration with Ms. Biel actually touches on a bit of brass band vibe late on so it’s a slow moody groover. There’s two mixes featuring Hamburg’s sound innovator Stimming (‘Kleine Nachtmusik’ on Buzzin’ Fly was Track of the Year in iDJ in 2008) and as Dwight Trible may say, “he knows what the kids like”. Well if they go for the ‘Sunrise Mix’, we’ll stick with the ‘Sunset Mix’. Ben Watt must be one of the most unlikely heroes of London clubland after making his name with popster Everything But The Girl but as Buzzin’ Fly reaches its 50th single with ‘Bright Star’ the light is far from going out after nearly seven years since the London-based imprint launched; 001BUZZ with Watt’s own best-selling ‘Lone Cat’ in 2003. With the label acclaimed over the years for its original artwork (courtesy of iwantdesign) it seems only right that this 50th release will be extra-special. The 12” will be an ornately-designed strictly limited deluxe collectible gatefold edition, pressed on 180gm heavyweight vinyl. Although costing more than a regular 12”, each one will carry a unique code that will allow the buyer to download a 320kbps MP3 of the release for free (there’s a Birthday Prezzie mix below if you check out the links) Now we’re in the same boat as all the early reactors (as below) but I’ve got wind that the 51st release (‘Soldiers’ by Mademoiselle Caro & Franck Garcia) is at least as good as this! Wow, heady days for the Buzzin’ Fly crew - FLY ON! Reviewed: Stimming, Ben Watt & Julia Biel - Bright Star (Buzzin’ Fly Records) Cat. We had a great time at the Pizza Express Jazz Club in Soho closing the London Jazz Festival back in november (it was lovely seeing so many of you there btw) and now they’ve invited me and my band back again. Sunday 11th APRIL. (see below for full details).
If you missed it and/or haven’t caught the live show for a while, have a look at some live footage from the gig featuring one of my favourite songs from the forthcoming album. See it on my myspace page here, http://www.myspace.com/juliabiel
Speaking of the album, as I still navigate my way unchaperoned through the unpredictable maize that is the music industry, the wait for its release goes on but there have been some very very encouraging signs on both sides of the channel as well as across the pond - so patience a little longer folks! Meanwhile I’m enjoying myself writing the next album and getting my solo chops happening.
Spring gig list below.
love,
