Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. You will recall that last year, Deborah Jordan released her excellent debut album The Light on Futuristica Music so it seems appropriate that when she got together with label boss Simon Skolfield to form a duo, they should get inot the light source for inspiration; thus Sun Circle is [re]born. As Fustustica Music released last years’ album of the Album Of The Year (Emanative’s Space if it’s slipped your memory), Reborn is another Album Of The Year. How can I confidently say this? Well, the truth is that I’ve had this on repeat now for weeks and I can assure you that there’s there’s at least two sure fire future classics in the title track and the magnificent ‘Stars Fall Down’. Has Deborah’s vocals sounded better? (bearing in mind that just a small part of her CV includes appearance with Robert Mitchell’s Panacea (with more due in 2010 so stay tunned), Silhouette Brown (warning, the current Silhouette Brown incarnation sans Deborah is a very poor by comparison), hip-hop heads Shape Of Broad Minds, Electric Conversation, Replife and, of course, Emanative (for more of a recap on Ms. Jordan, we last interviewed Deborah a few years ago - see HERE). And fans will be most impressed throughout, but particularly ‘If You Speak’ that’s ‘trademark’ in mode and performance, i.e. excellent. So what’s Simon’s role is all this you might ask? We’ll he’s Mr. Beats (particularly the instrumentals ‘Sun Circle Theme’ and ‘Interlude’) and whilst he’s busy being the head honcho of Futuristica Music, globe trotting DJ (mostly London and Bournemouth at the moment), leading light of Jazz Chronicles (both the Jazz Chronicles project and the monthly session at 60 Million Postcards). And talking of which, ‘I Can See The Sun’ is better than any sunset on the beach and whilst on the subject of Bournemouth (well the seaside anyway), ‘Peaceful’ is clearly influenced by the sea shore chill-out ambient jazz beat poets that takes you to a different place. As does ‘Stand Still’ that has the same vibe (but more so) and is like a spacey-misty French soundtrack (even if sung in English); honestly this would freak out cinematic lounge-heads (I’m feelin’ MJQ meets Madlib in 60s Paris - I’m going to be pushin’ for the AEOC meets Madlib in 70s Paris for the remix so be warned!) The track ‘Beginnings’ is on a downtempo funky late nite jazz trip walking along the Embankment (possibly in the rain) and it’s yet another killer track (who’s on the bass here?) and to top them all off, cinematic and modally, ‘My Story’ is as magnificent as anything by Jason Swinscoe at the Albert Hall. Tricky to say there’s a best track but ‘Stars Fall Down’ is up there (and there’s a fantastic Mr. Beatnick dub mix that’ll blow you away and another in the Fusturistica roster that we love, Mark Rapson has also remix it in a very Cinematic Orchestra type way; these two are phenomenal). If you’ve not guessed by now, I’m a bit of a fan of this album and I’ll not be the only one as there’s not one duff track on it. You’ll find a total musical synergy of togetherness about this one (mind, spirit and even front cover) and whilst retirement is a long way off, the pair can certainly put their respective feet up for a little time at least and reflect on an excellent job done; the pair are Reborn as one musically. Sun Circle is so perfect in the 360-degree round, this is their zenith! Reviewed: Sun Circle - Reborn (Futuristica Music) Cat. No: FMCD008 Release date: January 2010 Links: |
