Swimming - Panthalassa / Crash The Current

Here’s something from the edge of the pool off, John and Peter Sampson, Andrew Wright, Jonathon Spittlehouse and Blake Pearson (aka Swimming) were personally invited by Emily Eavis to play at Glastonbury last year after a digital release on Brighton’s Izumi Records, it time to preview the debut album.

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Championed by the seeker of all things new, Radio 1’s Huw Stephens, they’ve now set up their own Colourschool label and this is the preview single for the debut album (The Fireflow Trade) that’s out soon.

As you might guess from the title, ‘Panthalassa’ is somewhere between Rush and erm.. the rock equilvent of Fellows, Morton & Clayton; prog rock lives outside of the castle walls (mine’s a pint of Cobweb Mild in The Trip). As rediculus as it sounds, this great but the flip aa-side, ‘Crash The Current’ is even better.

Synths, big drums and whining vocals, you’ll want to crash the current (whatever that means) and on the obligatory remixes on download are by unknowns (to us anyway) and our favourite is the oddity of the 4*4 house cum Duran Duran disco of the Lalalepus remix. This follows the Kasabian dancefloor remix buzz of a couple of years ago and it’s good to see these lads from Nottingham take on the Liecester upper school; in fact that’d be a good battle of the bands if you ask me. Must check on Pete Tong cred, he should have played this version by now?

Next up, back on ‘Panthalassa’ is the Russian Linesman (aka Jamie Boyer) that’s a bit trippy ESG! Throbbing bass and echoy synths “everywhere” and a Hawkwind type ending - the ball is definitely over the line whilst Zero Theory keeps it experimental at it’s a bit industrially mess, like an oil leak in the foundry, but there’s a touch of early Eno going on that can’t be a bad thing.

The set ends with the mysterious Weshowuponradar remix that’s actually the oddest of the lot as it incorporates a bit of birdsong but then it goes all synth pop territory; bloody brilliant though, needs to be in a soundtrack like Awaydays.

I’ve belonged to a few Swimming clubs in my time but these lot are probably a bunch of sinkers (check the manual) but I’ve got my goggles on and I’ll swim with the current. I feel love like I’m Donna Summer.

Forthcoming Gigs:
16th June - The Fly, New Oxford St. London
19th June - Brownes, Nottingham
19th July - Lovebox Festival, Victoria Park, London
