Tal M. Klein - Magical Horses EP

For fans of the Tal M. Klein, this is going to be a bit of a surprise in some ways as nearly everything he’s done to date is so FLY; but Magical Horses sees him take off.

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

This one goes off big time as Tal M. Klein gets into the disco! Yep, I said disco! After all that we’ve had of lately from Norway and the back catalogue of Disco Discharge, this three tracker has massive appeal; and somewhat of a change from Klien’s Plastic Starfish and Crawling Up The Spout.

On the starters’ orders then with ‘Unicorn In The Garden’ as this is Tal and his “Disco Villain” mate Anthony Mansfield go deep into the stables of Horse Meat Disco. And when you’ve got to grips with that, the bonus beats version is ideal pre/post ‘Get Carter’ (by Jah Wobble) as its a tabla bass out to his “psychedelic curry house gloom of the 70’s North East”.

And as ‘Get Carter’ is released on Pressure Sound (a label spin off from On-U Sound founded by Andrew Weatherall) we hear that said Mr. Weatherall played ‘Pegasus In The Dark’ at Fabric’s 10th Anniversary “and the place went off”. I’m not surprised as the b-side is far more housey as Tal and The Hardway Brothers go disco house before they burn their wings, a formula that makes it a current favourite of Jim Stanton (he of said Horse Meat Disco. As quick aside, Simon S of Futuristica Music is playing next door to Fabric at Smiths Of Smithfield this Thursday were he’s bound to play Mr. Beatnick’s ‘The 4th Day’ (see review HERE).

Back at the Magical Horses EP, the whole thing is fantastic but I think I’ll go with the ‘Unicorn In The Garden’ with its dubby bass, funky guitar riff, the massive jazzy flute break and Peech Boy heritage - yes it’s that good and more. This EP sort of reminds me a bit of the formative years of labels like Afro Art and 8 Ball Recordings when everything they did was fresh and exciting; but even better!

Don’t wait for this one as it’s as good as a night at Larry Levan’s Paradise Garage!
