Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Not if that was the only thing Talc had to offer. Like ‘Minder’, Talc have a funny side to them as we found out on their summer BBQ hit, ‘Garden Of Dance’. And unlike the obvious ‘comedy’ of, say, Goldie Lookin Chain that is quickly tiresome, Dr. Fun and The Gift are more sutble. Some might say twisted, as with ‘Modern Sleep Over’ or ‘Father Tomato’. ‘Cheese Dreams’ is another odd one as they sing, “you probably don’t know what this song is about”; psydedelic brie? Whatever they’ve been eating/smoking/drinking, there’s no doubt they are both very musically gifted. The sleeve notes tell us that the two of them produced, wrote, mixed all the tracks as well as singing and playing flute, saxophone, percussion, synthesiser, drums, guitar, percussion, steel guitar, bass, electric piano, Hammond organ, piano, trombone and theremin!. Talc then are smooth musically, if a little tacky lyrically. ‘Kings Of The Road’ is not a tribute to white van men but bicycles. Stand outs include ‘All At Sea’ and ‘Niteklub’. For Katie, ‘Bobby Fame’, which has some pertinent lyrics but an even better intro. Very catchy if the truth be told like ‘Dad’s Tired’. This is one of those that as you find yourself humming during the day, even if the subject matter is too close to home. ‘Modern Sleep Over’ is another one like that, especially for laptop bound journos (a Jazzanova mix pick!). The album title Sit Down Think comes from the lyrics to ‘Please Please Please Me’ as first heard on the Underground Hits And Exclusive Bits! which is more at the Steely Dan end of their influences. As there’s nothing on TV, it would be a good idea to get the CD and have a laugh and a boogie at the same time. You’ll be hearing more of Talc as they are ideal for the TV/Radio, at least as much as Ms. Melua, perhaps even more so as this is jazz, soul and funk at its end of the pier best. I bet she or Denis Waterman couldn’t get Natasha Kaplinsky into any of their lyrics. What about a Talc cover version of ‘I Could Be So Good For You’? The Katie Melua remix? Oh! Don’t laugh. Hectic Mix nomination: ‘Dad’s Tired’, ‘All At Sea’, Niteklub Reviewed: Talc — Sit Down Think (Wah Wah 45s) Cat. No. WAHCD003 Release date: 02 Oct 2006 Links: |
