Terry Callier - Welcome Home

Terry Callier is as home on the stage as anywhere else so this live recording at the Jazz Cafe seems as comfortable as popping round to his gaff for a cup of tea, Welcome Home.

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Callier’s incredible life in music started in the sixities, released one of the best soul records of all time in the 70’s (‘Ordinary Joe’ produced by Charles Stepney), disappeared in the 80’s (a period when he lectured in computing at the University of Chicago) to then re-emerge in the 90’s when Acid Jazz Records boss Eddie Piller brought him over to the UK to gig and record for Talkin’ Loud (the classic Timepeace from 1998 won a United Nations award). Since then he’s released four albums on Mr. Bongo and has notably worked with ‘followers’ like Massive Attack, 4-Hero, Koop and Hardkandy.

This set was recorded on 14th March concentrates on songs from the last ten years. He’s lost none on his New Folk Sound as he melds jazz, soul, folk and blues. Starting with a contemplatory ‘When The Music Is Gone’ that’s all about peace, freedom, justice, love and the sound of his sweet voice. The band are on great form (particularly Bosco d’Olivera on ‘C’Est la Vie’) and you can tell from the crowd’s reactions that it was a crackin’ night. In addition to his two spoken ‘intros’, roughly on the theme of “What I like about John Coltrane”, highlights are the start of ”What About Me’ that’s an excerpt from his classic ‘Love Theme From Spartacus’ and ‘Timepeace’ that will always be relevant.

There’s a DVD of him live in Berlin from 2005 that’s often repeated on the Performance channel but this album is not only a record of one Friday night gig in London town, it’s reminder of how great he is. His next album Hidden Conversations (which also sees him reunited with Massive Attack) and is due out now next Spring so expect Terry to go from strenght to strenght as his fan base just get bigger and bigger, the music will never go.
