The Black Seeds - Into The Dojo

The Black Seeds are coming to Europe on Tour and the double-platinum selling third album, In The Dojo is coming out too.

We’re thoroughly in love with the tracks on the EP, ‘Cool Me Down’, ‘The Prince’ and the brilliant opener, ‘The Answer’ (see review). So it’s no real surprise the rest of the album is equally as good.

Barnaby ‘Flash Harry’ Weir may not have the soulful voice of Joe Dukie (of Fat Freddy’s Drop) but it’s not too far away. And don’t get the impression that this band of Kiwi’s are second best either. If you haven’t been convinced by the EP (and you should have been), the downtempo ‘Got A Girl’ has some dubby harmonies going on and it’s turning into a favourite.

‘Way Of The World’ is another downtempo track that stands out for some serious trombone work while ‘Heavy Mono E’ has the most FFD about it with its monstrous bass.

Phil and Kirsty will get ‘Love For Property’ that has the chorus feel of ‘Police & Thieves’ and a couple of others look back in time. ‘Good People (Get Together)’ is a bouncy tune in a ‘Now That We’ve Found Love’ groove and ‘One By One’ is the only one a bit dodgy as a Mungo Jerry ska (you can’t be perfect all the time).

These guys are supposed to be great live and you can tell from just this album that they’ve got some great material — just run ‘Sometimes Enough’ into the dub and the bonus track from the previous album.

A new album coming out in November so time to catch up with these lot now before they get as massive over here as they are at home.

Hectic Mix nominations: ‘The Answer’, ‘Cool Me Down’, ‘Way The World’, ’ Heavy Mono E’, ‘Sometimes Enough’, ‘Sometimes (Dub)’, ‘The Prince’.
