The Oscillation - Out Of Phase

You know what this album is all about from the name of the artist, the title and the cover but if you’re still in doubt, think of this as a radio transmission from Saturn and you’re on the right wavelength

Out Of Phase

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

I’ve been a little out of touch with DC Recordings since Vincent Markowski’s ‘The Madness Of Moths’ but this album is a quintessential modern update of early Floyd with a phantasmagorical nature.

This is best exemplified by the re-interpretation ‘Head Hang Low’ that was originally by the greatest pot-head pixie that’s ever lived in Tamworth, Saint Julian Cope. Demian Castellanos dug deep for that one as it’s a real oldie from 1984’s World Shut Your Mouth album and it’s the most accessible tune on the album; hence released as the first 7” single and download.

But then this isn’t typical of the album as ‘Head Hang Low’ is a change of direction from the first four leftfield ambient electronica tracks, all written by Castellanos including the short but excellent ‘Distant Transmission’ and ‘This Is Nowhere’.

The Ocillation has a penchant for the live drum sound (like Flowriders bringing in Richard Spaven) this album utilizes either Tim Weller or Maff Scott (who also co-writes half of the album). This works well on the more ‘rock’ tracks and even the 10 minute dreamscape of ‘Visitation (Exit)’ and the dub of ‘Comatone’ (Reprise)’.

However, my current favourite is the funky post-punk tune with the PIL baseline, ‘Gamelan Mindscape’ . Also check the 70s Krautrockin’ Amon Düül throwback to ‘Respond In Silence’ and ‘Hear Your Sadness’.

This album joins the dots between John Peel, Eddie Henderson, Team B (see links below) and a few more besdies.

Castellanos is also working with Tim Holmes (Death In Vegas) and working on a new project with members of the Sun Ra deciples, Chrome Hoof.

Hectic Mix nominations: ‘Gamelan Mindscape’, ‘Comatone (Reprise)’, ‘Visitation (Exit)’, ‘Visitation’, ‘Hear Your Sadness’.
