The Rebel Yell - Love & War

Admittedly the cover is a little scary and for an album that starts with a track called ‘Army Of Misfits’, can previous outings with R&B royalty like The Roots, J*Davey, Erkyah Badu and Common (to name just a few), find love rather than war on this new album from The Rebel Yell?

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Regular readers will know that we love all the BBE compilation releases but this is not an easy listen, primarily because it’s possibly aimed to Mariah Carey fans who are looking for a Grey album version with Sgt. Peppers; or Beach Boys or Sly Stone or Radiohead or Prince or Pharrell or even Ocean Colour Scene!

One day, perhaps this album could be acknowledged as a masterpiece but as the label says, “nothing prepares you for this”. ‘Heartbreak 101’ was the first track the well respected Philly writer/producer Poyser recorded with singer SupaStar and it’s perhaps the best of the ‘pop’ side of the album. But if they’d stopped there, we wouldn’t have got to hear the old skool synths of Tubeway Army/Gary Numan on ‘Everybody Doing It’ (as an aside, Gary Numan at Salisbury is looking increasingly likely to be Hectic tour gig of the year for 2009); but it’s a long wait until we get to that track.

The album ends on a track called ‘Allnight’ and that’s how long this album seems to go on for. And for all the name dropping, on an album has such a strong Philly element to it, I was half expecting Michael Vick to turn up as misfit No. 1 (thankfully he doesn’t).

Top track is the electro boogie of ‘Spend The Night’ but even that has an abrupt fade out that doesn’t help this reviewer. If you like ‘Army Of Misfits’, it doesn’t mean you’ll like the rest of the album but I guess you’ll get ‘Welcome!’ (or X-Factor); blimey I feel I’m getting a House style left-right brain end of series 5 issue.

There’s the briliant line “The revolution will not be downloaded to your computer” (respect GSH) but is it worth it for that? I don’t think I’ve heard anything like this, or am I missing something? I need to know!
