You wouldn’t have though that Nottingham would be the centre of the “60s baroque pop revival” but The Soundcarriers (aka Adam Cann, Dorian Conway, Leonore Wheatley and Paul Isherwood) have nailed it. If you could put Joe Meek in a studio today with all his analog equipment (including lava lamp psychedelic freak outs) with David Axelrod’s jazzy grooves and the feathery female harmonies of The Free Design you’ve got the best of the West Coast of Carnaby Street at its peak. If Brian Matthews was still doing Sound Of The 60’s on Radio 2, you’d be wondering if this was made today or 30 odd years ago and it’s not surprising that the pundits are getting excited over this; definitely recommended.
