Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Opening to the echoes and revered sticky synths of Innocent (estonji remix) its strong connection with electronica is obvious. But the compilation turns from ambient electro to a modern-day take on hip hop with Allow, telling the story of daydreams, of lost loves. Influences from as far as Aphex Twin to Air and Röyksopp to Kanye West are prevalent throughout this album, making its sound a little unclear. Bouncing with glitches, rewinds, clicks and snaps aids in the ambience of the compilation which claims to mimic, through music, “a typical Berlin winter”. But Public Transport does cleverly mix the sound of distinctive genres to greet a new generation of listeners. As heard in the title track of the album, placing rapped lyrics to a dramatic piano and electro pop backdrop makes for an almost ethereal sound. This one is only for those open to a compilation which takes many genres under its musical wing. Public Transport was originally meant to be entitled Black and Bruised: The Mixtape for Suicidal Lovers, and maybe this would have been more poignant. Public Transport captures confusion, loss, melancholy and miscommunication through eerie vocals, repetitive melodies and hollow loops. Although its strength doesn’t lie in any one particular track, its ability to genre bend is this compilation’s ace card. |
