Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Shiva Records are best known for Crazy P, Fug and Neon Heights. Those with good memories will recall the Neon Heights ‘Cannonball’ 12” on Afro Art with a Paul Murphy remix on the b-side (see what Afro Art are up to now HERE) and on the remix, their hard to get and special rework of Jill Scott’s ‘Golden’ and their equally cheeky remix of Dwele’s ‘I Think I Love You’ that I included in my guest mix for Timeless Inspiration a while ago; in-between Fink’s ‘Pretty Little Thing’ and an early Aaron Jerome remix of D’Nell’s ‘This Thing (Session 95 if you want to hunt it down on ‘net). Anyway getting back to The Tivoli, are they anything like the other artists on the label? In short, no. These four guys from South Yorkshire hope to follow in the successful footsteps of guitar bands from the area. So whilst they struggle to keep it together with day and night jobs and the issues that are hitting us all in the credit crunch of a Christmas, notably onn ‘My Town’, don’t expect a copy cat Artic Monkeys or skinny jean art-rocker trash, or even electro synth pop that’s all been hip in the area at some point. Even if they still are angry young mean at heart, they have a sensitive side and an outsider for a Christmas hit would be ‘Drop Me Off In Rotherham’ that’s complete with brass band. It’s coming out as a double A single with the full-on stadia rock of ‘Common Foot Soldiers’ on the other side. They’ve not got the stage of stadia quite yet, the debut album National Service isn’t out until next February, they’re managed to sell out Sheffield’s City Hall on the 17th December with another gig at The Plug on Friday, 19th. I’m just trying to recover from the Steel City tour (Human League, Heaven 17, ABC) and Hank Wankford & The Lost Cowboys at the Tivoli in Wimborne (see how I did that!), but in truth I’d be more interested in Kora’s Cabaret Voltaire Versions album that’s coming out on the same day as the single on Shiva. I guess I’m just not ready to rock at the moment. Reviewed: The Tivoli - National Service (Shiva) Cat.No.: SHIVA14CD Release date: 2nd February 2009 Links |
