Today's Mathematics - 'Let It Go' (Remix EP)

Don’t let the name Today’s Mathematics put you off this five track EP outta Leeds, just let it go (on the remix).

And don’t cringe if I say the Cedar Remixes are like Bugz In The Attic merged with Break Reform. A Cedar remix appeared on Today’s Mathematic’s last 12” ‘Butterfly’ and it was well received by the big boys of heavy broken bass, Domu and Zero dB. I think Cedar’s remix of ‘Let It Go’ will get equall praise, especially the instrumental version.

Today’s Mathematics have Shaheen on vocals who makes up the band with, “jazz head Cousin J and hip hop junkie Testament”. She’s got a clear whispery style of delivery which suits the more minimal-modal Nostalgia 77 mix.

Friends of Fly, Ben ‘Nostalgia77’ Lamdin has been concentrating on his knew project (with Nathaniel ‘Natural-Self’ Pearn (called The Broken Keys) but he’s managed to find time for a couple of great remixes lately. Along with the subtle remix of Stark’s ‘Narita’, he’s done another one here. He’s seems to be getting more and more mellow and has highlighted the deepness of the cello and added some shiny vibes. This is a great trend for us jazz-heads (also check the new Anne Wirz 12”).

The news that Gilles Peterson’s show is going back to Wednesday’s early hours is promising as he’s suggesting he’ll be going leftfield. Well ‘Let It Go’ is definitely to the left of Pharrell Williams but it’s mainstream for me. Sorry I digressed but this 12” could do with some Radio 1 exposure a little more than Mr. Williams.

Anyway, getting back to Today’s Mathematics, the original version of ‘Let It Go’ is also included and the cello is magnificent (how many times have I mentioned that recently?) Shaheen’s voice seems clearer and more orchestral on every listen. Not so keen on the guitar solo bit but this is a mighty good 12”. Check their myspace site (see links below) and let us know what you think.
