Tosca - 'Heidi Brüh?' (!K7)

Heidi Brühl? She was a German film diva from the fifties and there’s a new 12” of four remix versions of a track called ‘Heidi Brühl’ off Tosca’s recent new album, J.A.C.

Friend of Fly, Sascha Weisz alerted us to Makossa and Megablast’s involvement on a Tosca remix project in ‘More of what’s going down in Vienna’.

In “finding the ‘right’ sound for the tracks,” the M&M mix creates “an electroid stepping house burner”! So it’ll come as no surprise to hear this mostly instrumental is my favourite version of ‘Heidi Brüehl’ even though it’s up against, Worldwide 2005 winners Sa-Ra and Plant-Life. The Makossa and Megablast debut album is planned to be released in Autumn 2006 on G-Stone. For the very latest, check the interview with Sascha and Marcus Wagner Lapierre (aka Makossa) at FiveGrandStereo (see links below).

Tosca are Richard Dorfmeister and Rupert Huber and for ‘Heidi Brühl’ they chose as guest vocalist Egyptian born, Paris-based Samiah Farah. Not that the lyrics will shed any particular light on Heidi or, for that matter, do you hear much of the vocals at all on the lead track off the 12”. Swag´s ‘Warehouse Workout’ mix has vocodered the vocal samples into a deep bass house stomp. You have probably come across Swag’s extensive remix catalogue at some stage or their own work like ‘Riot In Lagos’ from Rewind! 3 on Ubiquity Records.

By contrast, straight from their appearance at Montreux and Lovebox, Plant-Life’s take on the ‘Love Philosophy’ remix uses the vocal hook of Samiah singing ‘je pense’ and adds a spoken sample ‘So you’re a philosopher?’ Jack Splash joins in with some vocals and some subtle guitar. So when the sun is out, it feels just right. It is so laid back. And keeping that mood, Sa-Ra Creative Partners finish things off with their mix. The west coast’s top hip hop funketeers light up at the start of the track and go all bounce space funk on us. Not on their ‘Equipoise’ form but one to feel in the summer.

An interesting choice of remixers which can be split as M&M vs. Swag or Plant-Life vs. Sa-Ra or, as I’d like to think, some rather complimentary approaches with a wide appeal. !K7 getting back on form.
