Tricky - Council Estate |

With Portishead’s long awaited third album released last month and Massive Attack’s Meltdown festival ending yesterday, Tricky keeps up the re-immergence of the Bristol scene. As you’ll recall from his interview in the Metro on Monday, Tricky grew up on the Knowle West council estate and he got his break at the youth club at the age of 9 when they brought turntables into the club. When it comes to a tough childhood, Emmanuel Jal knows what tough, but both he and Tricky bring a message of positivity. Tricky might live in LA now but ‘Council Estate’ isn’t a return to trip hop or his half-rapped, half-sung “asthmatic whispering” style. This is Tricky in his abrasive grime-punk rock mode. The video was shot in a Paris banlieue by Valerie Pirson and on the www.knowlewestboy.com site, there’s a chance to remix ‘Council Estate’ if you think you can do better. The album Knowle West Boy is out 7th July, Links |
