Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. The less than sincere sounding title of the album, Trust Me belies the depth of the material covered on the 12 tracks. There’s a cinematic David Lynchness to this album with healthy nods to Nick Cave and the Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster on Diazepam. We’ve already come to terms with her single, ‘In Diesen Raum’ (with the great remix by DJ Hell) but here we have some tracks that extend her range from a mere electro queen. Like the opener, ‘Cowboy’ (sung in English) with Duane Eddy licks by Eff Jot Kruger. Others that stick in the head are the rock-a-billy Herbert of ‘This Strange Someone’, ‘Man On The Box’ and the haunting ‘I Was Wrong’ (some of these are currently featured on her myspace site). The odd café orchestra, hip hop jazzer with atmospheric vibes is ‘Guy Le Superhero’, which has already been out on a 12”, backed by ‘Sans Ta Scie’. This one is also sung in French and picks up the pace. With the help of a theremin (it’s more early Pere Ubu while ‘Neonlight Deadland’ is as close to Pere Ubu as you’re going to get these days (with horns but no David Thomas). On ‘The Scales And The Score’ she’s back in downtempo surfer guitar and ‘Even Sparrows Don’t Like To Stay’ could have been by Tom Waits (which is good in my book). The album ends with a dirge that she wrote the music for with lyrics by Will Oldham (aka Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy) . This is far better than Oldham’s ‘Black’ from 1996, which is the only one on the CD I’m not so keen on. And talking about worries, the cover shot of the beautiful girl (Trost) with a swan in A&E is a strong look (whatever it supposed to represent). As ever, don’t judge the CD by its cover as this is a great album, even if ‘In Diesen Raum’ is still standing out. An ideal listen on the way to and from Bestival listen and she’ll be massive hit there if she turns up next year, Trust Me. Hectic Mix nominations: ‘Sans Ta Scie’, ‘Neonlight Deadland’, ‘In Diesen Raum’ Reviewed : Trost — Trust Me (Four Music) Cat. No. FOR 82876821372 Release date: 11 Sep 2006 Links: |
