Twisted Tongue - Twisted Tongue

Twisted Tongue have the spirit of 70’s funk and psych soul in their veins so there’s no surprise that the debut album is coming out on the Acid Jazz label.

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

What with Gilles Peterson telling us about the Acid Jazz revival this week, the launch of Tri-Sound a couple of months ago with 60’s music enthusiast and co-founder of seminal record label Acid Jazz, Eddie Piller (along with Peterson) (check The Third Degree - Mercy) and the swampy ‘Sixteen’ and soul-rock of ‘How Do You Like Me Now?’ by The Heavy, the soul/acid-jazz scene is going thorough a purple patch at the moment and Twisted Tongue is a prime example.

Twisted Tongue are based around the duo of Dave Jay and Mark Dalton have brought all the talents of a modern production team to their soul boy roots as they mine Northern Soul (‘Got A Really Good Thing’), Parliament/Funkadelic (‘Who Says An Earth Band Can’t Play Funk?’), the mighty Ohio Players (‘Sleep Talk’ - oh! how we loved thier album covers ) and the musical highlight for jazz heads, Graeme Flowers’ magic horn on ‘(I Need A) Freak For Armageddon’ and ‘Mindbeam’.

‘Mindbeam’ Part 2 is the trippy downtempo track on the album which is the exception as the rest of the album electro funks up big time including the Sly Stone/Sa-Ra-esque ‘Killing Angelina’ and ‘Oh Father! My Own Nunk Band!’

I’m not so keen on ‘Love In The City’ but the album ends on a high with the soul-funk Roger Troutman/Isley Bros groove of the ‘Niagra Song’; if you want to get it on tonight, this is the one.

There have been some big names on the Acid Jazz label in the past but this album is well up there with their past greats but not in direct comparison as its not really what you might expect. And whilst Peterson has been on Radio 1 for 10 years this year, Acid Jazz, the label, celebrates its 21st Anniversary! Perhaps it is time for a Galliano reunion? But until then, put your funk in the hands of Twisted Tongue as they are the new heir apparent.
