Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. With themes of migration and travel firmly at the foreground - A Gathering of Strangers takes us on a musical journey that stops off at traditional Celtic folk, Czech dubstep, Victorian music hall, Balkan beats, Hungarian folk and numerous other points along the way. As one would expect from collection as eclectic and diverse as this, not all the tracks will be to everyone’s taste as the album is not afraid of some leftfield moves and sharp changes of direction. But, for anyone with some time to spend exploring the intersection between modern and traditional European folk A Gathering of Strangers is well worth investigating. On a such a diverse collection of tracks it is difficult to point to highlights, but honourable mentions should go to ‘The Miner’s Dream of Home’ a modern interpretation of a music hall standard featuring Tindersticks’ Stuart Staples. Others worth noting include ‘Immigrant Song’ featuring DJ Lepe from Balkan Fanatik and the Czech dubstep of Side900’s remix of ‘Against the Storm’ featuring 1930s Czech comedians Voskovec and Werich. Given the time to explore, A Gathering of Strangers is a journey well worth taking and UNITE is a project well worth supporting. |
