Following in the deck-steps of Sonar’s own Jazzanova and Âme, as the first ‘outsider’, choosing Dego (aka Dennis McFarlane) was safe as houses. With his 4hero partner Mark Clair (aka Mark Mac / Visioneers / Brazilika) they have been at the cutting edge for more than 20 years from their jungle/dnb beginnings to their Play With The Changes album that made No. 7 is the Worldwide Winners of last year.

Dego resisted slipping in the brilliant ‘Morning Child’ into this set but it would fit in nicely with this eclectic set of his all-time favourites and some present day influences.

If you’re going to pick 15 tracks of electronica, funk, soul, hip-hop, reggae, dub, jazz and disco (and mix them together) you’re going to be pushed to find a better example than this.

We’ve featured many artists on here in the past, Dabrye (with the modern classic, ‘Game Over’), J-Dilla (‘Over the Breaks’ taken from the posthumous album The Shining), Sa-Ra remixing Roy Hargrove, Georgia Anne Muldrow and Waajeed’s ‘Make Doe’ from the War album.

And where do these guys get their inspiration? Yep, from the guys that did it years before them from P-Funk hero Bootsy Collins, knob twister of the dub kind, Scientist, reggae pioneers The Skatelites and one of the voices that you can’t get enough of, Patrice Rushen (she’s also rather good on the piano).

As ever, there is always huge amount of competiton with this type of album but Dego gives the impression here that he’s effortlessly produced this album which makes it all the more enjoyable.
