V/A - Beginner's Guide To World Music (World Cup 2006 Edition)

This special edition features 32 tracks from all the competing countries in the World Cup and it’s a right result.

V/A - Beginners Guide To World Music (World Cup 2006 Edition)

Following on from Beginner’s Guide To Afro Lounge compiled by Dom ‘Wah Wah 45s’ Servini, it’s another great collection. Not only that, it has been compiled by Fly’s very own Phil Meadley thus you’re assured of some quality tunes even if your team isn’t doing very well.

As we approach the end of the group stage of the competition, Africa’s ‘Black Stars’ of Ghana is the team to watch and we get the appropriately named Captain Ya with some Afro-‘Yaba Funk’. Togo have brought lots of colour and effort to the tournament and on the CD we have a chilled King Mensah tune.

In Europe, Holland’s is represented by Zuco 103 with a guest appearance of reggae boy himself Lee ‘Scratch’. The Dutch haven’t had their team bust up as yet and let’s hope they don’t.

As for the host nation Germany, not their greatest team by a long shot but never write them off. Also enjoying the 17 Hippies’ ‘Hotel Cazane’ in a modern umpah interpretation.

Whilst we’re always in two minds about the Argentineans (are they really as good as the pundits say?), we like the Tango Negro Trio. The favourites Brazil seems to have re-found their goal-scoring prowess last night but what of England?

Phil’s choice is a very welcome relief from the plethora of poor World Cup themes we’ve had to endure this year. Phil has no time for Fat Les and their types. Good call on one of the fathers of British folk, Richard Thompson (‘Old Thames Side’). What with the injuries (Rooney’s recovery, Owen’s early trip home with his knee), it is now time for Sven to get outta of chill mode and sort it out with Gerrard in a free role. Far too adventurous you’d have thought but you can never tell.

Back to the CD’s excellent choices by Phil, which will be just as good after the World Cup, whoever wins. Enjoy the festival and stay peaceful.
