V/A - Best Seven Selections Vol. 2

Head of Best Seven records and Berlin based DJ, Daniel W. Best must have been really busy as it’s been three years since the first Selections compilation came out. Don’t worry, Vol. 2 has definitely been worth the wait

Best SevenSelections 2

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

What with the mighty New Zealand crews of Fat Freddy’s Drop (who recently visited these shores and via DVD) and Best Seven’s new found reggae band from the antipodes, The Black Seeds, this complilation couldn’t have been timed better.

The FFD are represented by Joe Dukie’s beautiful vocals on ‘Take It Slow’ (with U-Brown) which we loved when it originally came out) and The Black Seeds with the increasingly addictive ‘The Answer’ (can’t wait for the album, In The Dojo).

Now we know the horn section of Fat Freddy’s Drop can blow, apart from turning up on Outlines’ track ‘Listen To The Drums’, they’ve got together with a couple of Jazzanovas to breath some life into an old beat on ‘Sista Riddim’. Instrumental jazzy reggae at its finest I tell you.

I regularly bang on about the excellence of Frost & Wagner and they get two spots on this CD. ‘Like A O’ features the vocals of Dub Clubber Paul St. Hilarie, which is a summer grower, plus an old favourite, the F&W remix of ‘A Certain Something’ that originally came out on INFRACom!

Another modern dub infusion that’s not on Best Seven or out of Berlin is Denmark’s Djosos Krost with ‘Better Place’ (good to see I’m one of a select group who supported this one when it came out) and then there’s DJ Vadim’s ‘Black Is The Night’ featuring the talented Kathrin De Boer (lead singer Belleruche). The original was recently released by BBE on The Soundcatcher album but this version’s got the echo chamber workin’ overtime.

This selection of the old and new of Euro-reggae might be missing Stereotyp’s ragga wildstyle or BiggaBush/Lightning Head’s Afro-dub-infusions, but Best Seven have brought us another insight as to why we should be as much looking forward to the current crop of spiritually inspired dub as celebrating Marley’s everlasting contribution.

Onward people and get this CD for the ride of your life, but take it slow.

Hectic Mix nominations: ‘The Answer’, ‘Sista Riddim’, ‘Ride Of Your Life’, ‘Natuaral Collie’, ‘Better Place’, ‘Black Is The Night’, ‘Soulmap’
