Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. And we’ve been fans of Mr. Haaksman for some time (see interview HERE back in 2006) and he’s got a habit of getting the best of the Europe matched up with the best of Brasil’s Baile Funk to get the best out in world funk; exactly, Funk Mundial. Those devils of electro house Crookers kick things off with ‘Para De Graçinha’ and then Count + Sinden are back with ‘Tamborzuda’ (its still a ‘bring the house’ down tune from the Funk Mundial #2 EP) and it’s been too long since we’ve had some Stereotyp action (last seen here with the album Keepin’ Me but see gig info below), so good to get a fresh Rob B edit of the much loved collab with Edu K and Joyce on ‘Jece Valadão’. I can’t say I’m so keen on the novelty ‘Subiu Desceu’ but that’s more than made up for with the bangin’ house of Oliver $, Haakman’s own tribute to Rio with MC Jennifer and West London’s Seiji showing off his knowledge of carnival beats with MC Dolores. Regular readers will know we love all things Makossa & Megablast whether it be their last album Kunuaka or the pick of last years’ Great Summergames Stuff compilation with ‘Tibet’, so ‘Late Que Eu To Passando’ is yet another stand-out track. Whilst Jesse Rose, the oft credited founder of “fidget” house, might be living in Berlin but there’s something Brasilian in him somewhere as ‘Toca Pra Mim’ is such a masterstroke of the simple combination of Deize Trignona’s threatening vocals and cow bell beat with a touch of echo. And ‘Chancha Via Circuito’ keeps the cow bell but has a goth rock attack to their electro bass funk. Also on the leftfield, To Com Saudade is a Hot 8 Brass Band meets MC Maiquinho in Rio on the dubsteps of Frikstailers. And not to be outdone, DJ C and MC Jorge Stylo shakes the bass bins to the limit and although I’ve no idea what any of these MCs/vocalists are going on about, with a bit a practice I could even sing-a-long (OK chant-a-long) to ‘Juce’. With ‘Who´s Afraid Of Rio?’ as bit of a statement track on Daniel’s (erm, we’re not afraid) but what you do get out off this collection more than anything else is what a consistently monstrous body of work Daniel has done over the past 4 years. And it definitely deserves to go worldwide, global and Mundial. Whilst he keeps bangin’ it out, we’ll keep buying it - another essential album this month.
