V/A - Danny Krivit: Edits By Mr. K Vol. 2: Music Of The Earth

Strut re-kindle their involvement with one New York’s most revered DJs and re-edit pioneers, Danny Krivit, with a fresh album of essential new, rare and classic re-works, past and present (that reads as “must have” in case you didn’t guess).

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Mr. Danny Krivit, last scene on on FLY with 718 Sessions returns to Strut with another string of his bow with a 2nd edition of his Edits By Mr. K.

Not quite in the same groove as Harmless’ recent 100th release, Philly ReGrooved: Tom Moulton Remixes but it’s just as much Daniel Wang party era (Wang being the star of Big Chill’s Super Sunday, see HERE).

Not only that, he kicks off with a track by one of our/your favourite song birds, Patrice Rushen (who recently graced the 15 year celebration compilation Pulp Fusion: The Return Of The Original Ghetto Jazz & Funk Classics with ‘Let Your Heart Be Free’) with a track called ‘Music Of The Earth’.

Apart from her glorious vocals, this one really sets the tone as it’s got the crucial element of any re-edit; length. Now we all know that length isn’t everything, but if you’re a in a club and into the groove, it certainly helps.

And Kravit knows all about clubs (with a load of residencies and used up passports) as he champions the best in soulful house, disco and Afro-dance (718 Sessions sessions currently to be found in Brooklyn and Manhattan). It certainly hasn’t done him any harm producing Mr. K edits (apparently there’s over 300 since he started in the mid 80s).
Strut released Vol. 1 back in 2003 (I seem to recall buying that one in Camden Town) and Vol. 2 covers soulful disco, funk and jazz; i.e. Music of The Earth.

Fans with rush to the previously unreleased re-work of Black Blood’s Afro-rock rarity ‘Chicano’ and an extended workout on the Chairmen Of The Board’s prog-psych-jap-soul-funk classic, ‘Life & Death’ (incredible by anyone’s standards).

Milton Hamilton’s ‘We Have All The Time’ is like a cross between Incognito, Herb Albert and Minnee Ripperton which mean classic and Mr. K just makes it better.

If you’ve recently hunted up Midnight Movers’ ‘Follow The Wind’, this version still has the horn but it’s far more funky but I so love the sound of ‘Let Me Down’ (so adopted by Italo-House) with all it’s strings and Northern Soul Modern Room connotations (well this did originally come out in 1973!.

Blue Modérne is more in the mid-80s electro early house groove (Ed. 1986 I think) and Sound Experience is a poor man’s Chicago until they 70s funk-out at the end.

As we build up to ‘Life & Death’, there’s a couple of huge classics that he’s had the balls, guts and other parts of his body to have a go at. Philadelphia All-Stars’ ‘Let’s Clean Up The Ghetto’ could have been Obama’s theme in the mid 70s (over in the UK we had the Winter Of Discontent which could be back on for 2010 with the cut-backs?)

Mr. K cleans up the ghetto - as that’s where we (ALL) live - ‘Let’s Clean Up The Ghetto’ one of the world-changing greatest tracks of all time and on the same album at ‘Spanish Hustle’!: Music of the Earth you might (no must) say - I wish I was in Japan right now (see gig list below).

And how good are the Fatback Band? (this good see HERE) 8 minutes 43 seconds good of ‘Spanish Hustle’ good - better than ‘Chicano’ (just).

And on the subject of rankings, as a slight aside, I haven’t done a Hectic top 10 Chart for a long time but this CD is so inspirational, October 2010 could just be all of the tracks on this CD!

If you’ve got any hang-ups about this type of compilation (in some sort of holier than thou original versions are best sense - although I’m at a loss why some die-hards blog on about it), ‘Music Of The Earth’ is the ultimate ‘No defence’ answer - every track connects and make you want to move. Krivit is an expert whatever continent he’s on. Check him out as soon as and get the album.
