Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. You’ve got the idea by now and here’s 21 more track to disco down to even if the cover is a bit line dance scary; arguably even more scary than it’s predecessor Gay Disco & Hi NRG. As it does concentrate in late 70’s and early 80’s Gay clubland, there’s no better way to start than with a big `Lift Off’ by Hi NRG pioneer Patrick Cowley, And it’s packed with original album versions and 12” mixes from ‘Hot Leather’ to ‘Boys Will Be Boys’. It’s not all overtly G.A.Y as the pink pound has a certain amount of cross over with the euro connection as Les Models exchange ‘Don’t Ever’ with ‘Yes With My Body’ and Hi NRG’s most famous girl group The Flirts give us ‘Danger’. And over on CD2 there’s a cover of the Euro disco classic by Baciotti ‘Black Jack’ by Tom Cat and eurocamp favourite by Virgin. As a lite version, Julius Brown’s ‘Party’ is a bit of fun, Caron ‘No Relation’ Cole says she needs a lover tonight in a big hair 80s way and my favourite is the squeaky refrain on ‘He’s Number One’. But as this is Pink Pounders and CD2 returns with Poussez and the threatening ‘Leave That Boy Alone’ quickly followed by the throbbing electro-goth-disco classic by The Immortals, `The Ultimate Warlord’ (don’t tell Hawkwind fans). Talking of classic, you don’t get bigger than Harris Glenn Milstead (aka Divine) in typical synth disco mode (‘Shake It Up’) whilst Peggi Blu gets “Raining Men” up North with a soft sax solo mid way before some serious percussive bass pounding and souped-up XR3 Bontempi. The Munich mix of `If You Love Somebody’ by Barbara Doust brings us some spacey euro-synth and `I Don’t Want To Lose You’ by Lime gets us back on form with more squeak and “Danger” warnings. Most of the 12” extensions contain the ubiquitous percussion break which is always worth while in my book but there is a sting in the tail. As ever, these guys are not afraid to line dance where others fear to wear a cowboy boot and they close each CD with a couple of horrors. Jermaine Jackson made the mistake of joining forces with non-entity wannabe Pia Zadora (but I bet he was paid handsomely) on a track called `When The Rain Begins To Fall’ that makes Montreal’s very own Disco Queen Patsy Gallant (with `From New York To LA’) sound fantastic by comparison; kitsch classic in true sing-a-long style. I wonder if Patsy is ready for love yet? Perhaps I’ll give her a call to see if she’s free. After all that, I wonder whether Disco Discharge is able to come back with 4 more double albums? I hope so and if you haven’t got to grips with this disco revival yet, here’s what you’ve been missing, Disco Discharge: European Connection, Disco Discharge: Disco Boogie and Disco Discharge: Diggin’ Deeper and last years’ Disco Discharge: Disco Classics, Disco Discharge: Euro Disco, Disco Discharge: Disco Ladies and Disco Discharge: Gay Disco & Hi NRG. Give me more, more, more!!! Reviewed: V/A - Disco Discharge: Pink Pounders (Harmless) Cat. No. HURTCD096 Release date: June 2010 Links: |
