You need some stamina to get to grips with this one, even Gilles Peterson owned up to not knowing what exactly this album was all about when he played a couple of tracks recently, Dave da Gato’s deep crazy jazz synth footprint called ‘Carbon’ (not quite Barry Miles but close) and ‘Carpet Vole’ by Madnus & Scogil.

I’m not really surprising when there’s 29 different artists on what is a DVD of iPod friendly 320kbps MP3 and AIFF files. Now on the plus side, it’s brilliant and it’s very reasonably priced at only £9.99!

To say Chris Vogado (Fluid Ounce main man and half of Ninja Tune’s Zero dB knows his stuff would be an understatement so with we’re inevitably going to get loads of our favourite producers represented.

Spanning artists that were just learning to love like October with the Houston EP and the stunning remix of Etalon’s Uniqueness to very old favourites of Fluid Ounce’s Nery Bauer, remember the Maharaja EP and the ‘Diana By Starlight’ 10”?

One of our favourites and beat expert’s MamikO is Daisuke Tanabe who supplies three tracks, some with more of a hint of his killer track ‘Mess’ going on (see the After Few Layers Before EP) plus Kids In Tracksuits (after remixing ‘Seen’ by Red) turn up with 4 of thier own hip-hop cuts and all rise for the wiered wonderment of the return of Raymond In Space (‘Galactica’ is glorious dubby bassline for Heavyweight Gringo types).

We’ve only heard of Arch_typ on the brilliant tracks ‘Pangea’ (with Deborah Jordan) and ‘Away (So Far)’ (off one of the album’s of the year, Replife’s The Unclosed Mind) but here’s another three great beats; one is funky, one is samba based and the last one is a bit wobbly bass bounce. And he’s been working with Yellowtail this year (he of ‘NRG’) who turns up with his own bruising broken ‘Dump Da Stump’ wobble.

But I suppose we ought of concentrate on folks we’ve not heard of like Nic Bossa (‘Sixty One’ is one of those twisted hip-hoppy jazzy beats we love) and the ‘unknown’ Barry Styles; this DVD is worth getting for his tracks alone, especially the 100mph ‘Jazz Dancer’ - brilliant.

It’s really unfair to miss anyone out as it’s all good and I keep finding tracks to be impressed by right up to the closing jazz-chill-out-noise-bongo breaks of the last track by some crazy called Zzouf; yeeaah!

Released in association with Tru-Thoughts (another one of our favourite labels) this is a reminder as to why we love Fluid Ounce, their vinyl releases were just so unpredictable. Some old favourites haven’t made the DVD (particularly Moonstarr, Frank De Jojo, Boiler Room Collective and Inverse Cinematics) but Vogoda clearly isn’t looking to the past as this type of DVD initiative is not only a labour of love but also an attempt to break new artists and provide them with some sort of income is this confusing times. So worth supporting at that level and at the level that this is great music also; recommended purchase as soon as you can.
