Four years ago it was the Jazzanova compilation Paz E Futebol: A Selection Of 20 Winners with a Brazilian Vibe that celebrated the the music and football of Bazil and with the Brazilian Football team in town this week at the Emirates Stadium (home of Gilles Peterson’s beloved Arsenal), this is the soundtrack to the biopic of all-time Brazillian legend and maverick genius Garrincha!!

Old school samba we are promised and old school samba we get - Umbro (as in England skit makers) claimed on their blog “a great musical accompaniment to our work as we start to look forward to the summer - and the World Cup”. Well if Gilles Peterson’s World Cup Soundclash this week didn’t get you in the mood (with less than 100 days to go before kick off), this will.

Just percussion heavy beats from the terraces mixed with a bit of lounge and psych finds it more appealing to mixtapers than jazzdancers but that’s unfair generalisation; whether it’s the hot shuffles of ‘Retirada Da Urca’, the jazz-batucada of ‘Samba Fantastico’ or the jazz-funk opener ‘Abertura’, this is a sunny Brazil at their yellow, green and blue best.

To prove the point, 44 seconds of ‘Samba Authentico’ is worth 44 minutes of some things I could mention but the likes of ‘Futebol Color’ and ‘Eu To Gravida’ are annoyingly short.

That said, the album finishes as it starts with the ‘short version’ of ‘Abertura’ and if that doesn’t want to make you score, there’s no John Terry, Peter Crouch or Shaun Wright-Phillips spirit in you at all.

it’s a busy week for ‘soundtrack’ albums (as in Oddjob’s Clint) and the Far Out team as they have also released the Limited Edition psychedelic heavyweight vinyl LP compilation Far Out Spaced Odyssey; three acclaimed albums on one day -Garrincha forever!!
