Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Subtitled, “Explorations Deep Inside the Vaults - 15th Anniversary Celebration Far Out Recordings 1994 - 2009”, this CD is as spectacular a mix as you’d expect from such a seasoned create digger as GP after poking around in the vaults of Far Out Recordings. Renowned BBC Radio 1 DJ, Peterson has a superb history as a compiler of albums, whether he’s on the Jazz Juice, Talkin’ Loud, Worldwide, Diggin’ America, Impressed, In Africa, In Brazil or at the Brownswood Bubblers; to name a mere selection of his best works. For his good mate, head of Far Out Recordings Joe Davis, he’s done a special birthday present “collage mix tape” that not only features some of the classic Far Out tracks, some of the more recent releases and delves into the vaults for some exclusive tracks (we loves that kind of stuff). You may recall that the original Brazilika album on Gilles’ Talking Loud album was put together by GP and Joe Davis and by coincidence was released 15 years ago (seems a lifetime ago, pretty sure I got my copy from the much missed Mr. Bongo record shop in Poland St.) and since then there’s been other instalments by Kenny Dope, 4 Hero and Andy Votel. We’ve done so many reviews of Far Out and Peterson, I could spend the next week putting links to the old stuff but what strikes me with Peterson’s mix is how well the new track blends in with the old timers like the Ipanemas, Grupo Batuque, Azymuth and Arthur Verocai (erm, no Marcos Valle!). And there’s the is it old/is it new, Jose Roberto Bertrami and his Modern Sound with ‘Joanna’. Even the leftfield Binario (but no Rabotnik) are here with the up and coming acts like Clara Moreno (class version of ‘Dexia A Nega Gingar’ from her new album Miss Balanço, Democustico and Zeep. He even slips in a track from the ‘lost’ Joyce, Nana Vasconcelos and Mauricio Mastro album Visions Of Dawn. It’s a tough call to sellect your favourites from over 150 Far Out releases and whilst Peterson has got it down to 23, it’s not a rushed as you might think; try Sidney Miller’s ‘E Isso Ai’ and Aleuda’s ‘Galope’, Wow!. Some other killer highlights include remixes from FLY favourites like Osunlade, Spiritual South (of ‘Depois Do Carnival’!) and Domu (Arthur Verocai’s ‘Tudo De Bom’). And that cover? Much better than some the have graced past Peterson’s CDs as it is by Andy Votel (who also did the cover of Visions Of Dawn). It’s coming out Monday and they say it’s going to be Far Out’s biggest release of the year. They also say; “pretty mad and very lovely” and I for one agree. Monumental mixtape of the moment? More like Mix of the year! Must have. Also comes in 12 track vinyl album version and don’t forget GP Beyond the Ballroom - A Celebration of UK Jazz Dance with Gilles Peterson, Snowboy, The Mighty Jeddo and Dilanga at Cargo on the 19th July (see preview HERE) Reviewed: Various - Gilles Peterson Presents Brazilika Explorations Deep Inside the Vaults - 15th Anniversary Celebration Far Out Recordings 1994 - 2009 (Far Out Recordings) Cat.
