Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Twelve songs of soul, hip hop, jazz, and more enter your ears via two carefully compiled discs. Released August 17th, 2007 on Resiste Records, Norman Jay connects a bunch of great songs together for the benefit of feet and soul. Artists include (disc one): Doug Lazy ‘Let It Roll’, Charles Dockins ‘Only You’, Eddie Kendricks ‘He’s A Friend, Pride N Politix ‘Nights Warner, 4 Hero ‘Morning Child Raw’, Lupe Fiasco ‘Kick, Push’, Outside ‘The Plan (-Tation Mix)’, Nicole Willis & Soul Investigators ‘A Perfect Kind Of Love’, The Velvettes ‘Lonely Lonely Girl Am I’, Antoine Clamaran ‘Keep On Trying (Hot 22 Mix)’, Modaji ‘Grass Is Greener’ and Sasso ‘Agua Y Luz’. On disc two expect artists: Bare Knuckle Soul ‘Just Right’, Nina Simone ‘Here Comes The Sun’, Salena Jones ‘Morning Dew’, Mario Biondi & High Five Quntet ‘I Can’t Keep From Cryin Sometimes’, Sister Riddim ‘Extended Spirit’, Fela Ransome Kuti ‘Water Got No Enemy’, D-Train ‘Children Of The World’, Shalamar ‘Attention To My Baby’, Clyde McPhatter ‘Thank You Love’, Joy Denalane ‘Soweto 96-06’, Eddie Holman ‘Time Will Tell’ and finally The Love Affair ‘Bringing Back The Good Times’. The mix of genres is a mind opener, one’s musical ear may find it takes some adjusting to, however Norman Jay’s own musical expertise helps make the attempt pretty effortless. There are a few strange entries such as Doug Lazy’s ‘Rap House’ song, which for what it is, is rather bland and empty. For soul heads, you’re in for a real treat as there are plenty of soul songs starting with the legendary Eddie Kendricks and the head nodding ‘He’s A Friend’. Then, straight to modern day soul sounds by 4 Hero with Deborah Jordan on vocals, ‘Morning Child Raw’. Outside with ‘The Plan (-Tation Mix)’ is a soul satisfier, and the brilliant female vocalist Nicole Willis & Soul Investigators ‘A Perfect Kind Of Love’ does the same thing. The laid back hip hop groove on Modaji’s ‘Grass Is Greener’ is just as beautiful and inspiring. For disc two, you’ll find more soul gems, along with reggae songs by Sister Riddim on ‘Extended Spirit’, which offers soul in a reggae style. Without forgetting, Fela Ransome Kuti’s sublime Afro-Cuban jazz instrumental. Its twinkling piano, thundering horn section and Afro beat sets the mood. Clyde McPhatter’s gritty ‘Thank You Love’ lyrically delivers honesty and is vocally sultry. German, Berlin songstress, Joy Denalane and her ‘Soweto 96-06’ deserves praise. However, this compilation which has many soul offerings, suddenly ends on a disappointing sound with Eddie Holman ‘Time Will Tell’ and The Love Affair’s tragic ‘Bringing Back The Good Times’. |
