Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. The follow-up to last years’ debut Horse Meat Disco compilation (see review HERE) is as big as its predecessor as you’d expect from the DJ quattro disco experts of James Hillard (ex-Nuphonic), Jim Stanton (ex-Jockey Slut), DJ Severino (CODEX) and Luke Howard (aka Filthy Luka). Back with the team Strut, here’s some more underground disco and rarities that have been under wraps at their Vauxhall base being road tested to perfection before being let loose. Now you’ll probably recognise the name of Stephanie Mills (she of ‘Never Knew Love Like This Before’) but her ‘You Can Get Over’ is much harder and bette (reminds me of Caroline Crawford; yes, that good). And there’s the distinctive jazz sound of El Coco’s ‘Afrodesia’ (originally from the 1978 album Dancing In Paradise and not the famous Kenny Dorham track as covered recently on Gilles Peterson Presents Havana Cultura: Remixed album) but it’s their ‘finds’ out of the dusty creates that get my tank top movin’. Now you don’t have to be a fashion victim to fall in love with this selection. Ever heard of Leonore O’Malley? No, she’s not a singing nun, but the opening track, ‘First Be A Woman’ is pure anthem in the roller skating ‘I Will Survive’ rink of big strings, dodgy sax and cross dressing horn. HMD must have touched themselves with delight when they got their hands on this one. You’d have to be more than a woman to handle a whole album that’s as large as that as the first track but Cyclades’ ‘Fire To Desire’ isn’t far behind with fake whip last and 80s funky and Tara Butler doing some Jane Fonda inspired ‘carrots and beets’ workout - it’s a like Bustin’ Out track with Peech Boy sweat on its face; feels good. They certainly do like to have a good time as ‘Hot To Trot’ is so “them” in so many ways. And it just gets better with heavy percussive beats of the very rare Bravo track ‘Touch Me Now’ with strange hoe-down break in the middle of the funk and the faux Franco-file pop-rockness of Madleen Kane. Of course the mixing on the CD is perfect throughout and we’ll let them off the showboating extension of Scherrie Payne’s ‘I’m Not In Love / Girl, You’re In Love’ (Sch-errie, S-Cherrie?) and the HMD editing of ‘Nightime Boogie’ (odd one this, Jean-Michel Jarre goes to the disco with Duane Allman, perhaps?) Apart from the CD, the unmixed tracks are available to download and there’s an unmixed 2LP set if you prefer. With even Gilles Peterson biggin’ up the Horse Meat Disco (along with his other ‘picks’ Seiji, Sofrito Sound System and Toddla T - hey, that’s a huge night out!) and ending last week’s show with ‘Going Back To My Roots’ and championing the fantastic new Pat Les Stache 12”, the HMD sound is so now; don’t say see we didn’t tell ya and strongly advise you to get on your horse meat and ride like it’s time to touch to touch. So if you thought disco ended with the toll of ‘Ring My Bell’, think again, don’t say goodnight as its still disco dancin’ time at the Horse Meat Disco and they’re so hot to trot!
